Crowds behind barbed wire, stones flying towards the army, helicopters in the sky, quick assembly. This is not a preview of Tom Cruise’s next film. before screenings in Polish arthouse cinemas. This was announced on Thursday by the deputy head of the ministry, Błażej Poboży, and the spokeswoman of the Border Guard, Lt. Anna Michalska.
The spot is not a completely new ministerial production, but a 30-second recording from a month ago that was posted on the YouTube channel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration.
This is what the Ministry of Interior and Administration spot that will be shown before “The Green Border” looks like
The premiere of “The Green Border” in Polish cinemas was announced for next Friday, but attacks on the director have not stopped for several weeks. The film and she herself have already received reactions from probably all the most important government officials. However, the criticism was turned into action and from Friday, in arthouse cinemas, before the screening of “The Green Border”, viewers will see the following spot, produced for the Ministry of Interior and Administration:
The recording is intended to explain the government’s perspective on the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, where for two years refugees illegally crossing the border have been trapped between the Polish side and Belarusian services. The situation serves Putin, which no one denies. In the spot we hear about the “storm”, and are shown. The Ministry of National Defense wrote in a statement at that time about “instrumental use of migrants by Belarus (…) women and children are forced to approach the fence so that the Belarusian media can prepare their propaganda materials.” It is difficult to say what really happened at the border, because the events of 2021 took place during the then ongoing state of emergency, which prohibited Polish journalists from reporting from that region. .
After violent shots from the border crossing, the spot suddenly calms down and changes to brighter colors. The multi-kilometer fence that divided Poland and Belarus is shown. “We are defending the Polish border. Safe Poland” – we hear at the end of the spot.
“The Green Border” shows the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border
However, in “The Green Border” we will not see the refugees that the ministerial spot warns us about. Agnieszka Holland’s film focuses on the situation of those stuck in the forests, towards whom Poland uses the illegal (according to the courts) push-back tactic, i.e. pushing people who tried to submit asylum applications beyond the border line that has already been crossed. In accordance with international law, Poland is obliged to accept and consider such applications, while redirecting the migrant to a safe place where he can wait for the decision.
