Asian ladybugs called harlequins appeared in Europe a dozen or so years ago and quickly spread over almost the entire continent. They were imported from Asia because they had great potential to combat aphids. Unfortunately, along with devouring aphids, harlequins also devour crops, destroy plants and decimate the population of our native seven-spots.
Harlequin versus seven-dot
As soon as it gets colder, they try to get into our apartments in every possible way. We probably wouldn’t mind if they were just a few, but we often end up fighting swarms of them. Before we start effective defense, it is worth knowing how to distinguish Asian ladybugs from seven-spotted ladybugs. The first difference is already indicated by the name itself. Our ladybugs are red and have seven dots. Asian ones have different numbers. They also come in various colors, most often light red, orange or yellow.
Are Asian ladybugs dangerous?
Indeed, these insects can bite, but don’t worry – they don’t do it more often than other species of ladybugs. And how many times have you been bitten by these insects? Probably never. When it comes to harlequins, the worst thing that can happen to us is an allergic reaction. The insects themselves are simply a nuisance to people.
How to deal with them?
We should make sure that they cannot get into our apartments. Therefore, it is worth locating any gaps through which they can squeeze, and installing nets in windows and doors. Ladybugs often appear on walls heated by the sun, so if a given place is illuminated by strong sunlight, it is worth closing the window for some time.
To prevent Asian ladybugs from flying into our apartment, it is a good idea to use measures that deter them. However, we are not talking about products available in stores, which are often irritating and toxic. The following oils will work great: menthol, camphor or citrus. We can buy them literally for a few zlotys. Just smear them on window frames and door frames to effectively deter harlequins. Another option is to mix them with water and wipe or spray the frames with a sprayer. This treatment should be repeated from time to time.
