Maciej Stuhr comments on the right-wing campaign against the “Green Border”: We still want to talk about hatred

Maciej Stuhr commented on the wave of criticism directed at Agnieszka Holland’s latest film. The actor, who played a cameo role in the production, told what the film was about and noted that it was not the first time that a Polish work aroused such extreme emotions.

“The Green Border” is definitely one of the most famous Polish films of recent years. The work has been controversial long before its premiere. The director created a picture in which she showed the human face of the humanitarian crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. The Polish right and its supporters did not like it.

Maciej Stuhr about “The Green Border” by Agnieszka Holland

Although the premiere of “The Green Border” was scheduled for September 22, Agnieszka Holland received a lot of hate. Main complaint? “An anti-Polish film that spits on the uniform,” say the comments. Reviewers who have already seen the film have a completely different opinion. You can read critics’ opinions on Rotten Tomatoes, in which the authors point out that it is a universal story about humanity that points out the mistakes of the European Union, especially.

One of the episodic roles in “The Green Border” was played by , who also denies that the Border Guard was presented in a bad light in the production. In an interview with natemat.pl, the actor emphasized that there are several different perspectives in the film, but the one that stands out among them is the attitude of the hero played by Tomasz Włosok. “They showed an extremely human – of course full of dilemmas – cool guy working in this particular Guard,” says the actor. Stuhr claims that if the Guard were actually shown in a negative way, “there would be nothing to collect.” “This is not a film aimed at the Border Guard. It is a film about people,” he emphasizes.

“This is a movie about people”

The actor also notes that this is not the first Polish film that will spark a similar discussion. Stuhr mentioned, for example, “Pokłoś” and noticed that the situation from 12 years ago was repeating itself. “We are very trained in hatred and we look for topics to fight,” he claims.

Stuhr also emphasized who “The Green Border” is really about. “She [Agnieszka Holland – przyp. red.] she made a movie about good people. All people who have seen this film agree on this. And we still want to talk about hatred in these discussions,” the actor notes.
