Princess Diana’s legacy continues to be a source of admiration and a fashion icon. Twenty-six years after her tragic death, three of her most famous outfits have made headlines again, selling for a whopping $1.6 million.

However, this story has a surprising twist that began in 1997, when Princess Diana donated 79 of her dresses to raise funds for charity. Among the lucky customers was Ellen Petho, who bought five of those dresses for the amount of 150 thousand dollars that she was originally supposed to buy a house with.

According to the Daily Mail, the Michigan-based interior designer displayed the dresses at charity events for several years, keeping Diana’s original purpose alive, until her death at age 82 last January.

This is how widower Louis Petho expressed it to the Daily Mail: “I knew Diana’s passion for helping children. “She bought the dresses to carry on that legacy and, of course, it turned out to be something beautiful.”

However, the man recently decided to help raise money for the scholarship fund by selling three of the five dresses: the iconic black and white striped dress along with an elegant black and green silk design, both by Catherine Walker, as well as a bright red dress by designer Bruce Oldfield, reports Vanity. Fair.
