is one of the most popular programs of Telewizja Polsat, which has been attracting millions of viewers for almost a decade. The formula is simple. The participants’ task is to faithfully reflect the musical artist whose name they have taken part in. The jurors decide whether they managed to do it. In each episode, a winner is selected, and those with the most points reach the finals to take part in the final showdown.
The Polsat show is full of controversies. Strong accusations were made in previous seasons
It cannot be denied that the show is the subject of media discussions from time to time, especially when the participants have to face the reflection of a black artist. Then it is their characterizations that arouse disgust among viewers. This was the case, among others, in 2018, when Bogumił Romanowski was tasked with performing “Hotline Bling” from Drake’s repertoire. Poles assessed his performance quite enthusiastically, but the English-language press accused him of racism due to his darkened skin. Less than a year later, Ewelina Lisowska, whose task was to play the role of the famous rapper Wiz Khalifa, also had to face similar accusations.
Gonciarz and Szmajkowski under fire. It was about their appearances in “Your Face Sounds Familiar”
“Your Face Sounds Familiar” is currently on. Only its 2nd episode was broadcast, but it did not arouse a positive reaction from viewers. The reason was the characterizations of the participants, which, according to many, are a manifestation of racism. The news spread quickly, even abroad. Particular controversy aroused the performances of Kuba Szmajkowski, who won the episode as Kendrick Lamar, and Pola Gonciarz, whose task was to portray Beyonce. The British magazine left no stone unturned on young artists.
Singer Kuba Szmajkowski won the second episode of the 19th edition of the program ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ after performing Kendrick Lamar’s song ‘Humble’ in a black outfit, fake mustache and fake beard. He also used the word starting with the letter ‘N’, which was not censored by television during its broadcast.
The word in question is “nigger”, which is widely considered to be an offensive term for black people. But that’s not all. As the British press explains, the participants’ makeup is the so-called blackface. This term refers to a type of makeup that is performed according to stereotypical ideas about people with darker skin. There was also a discussion on the Instagram profile about the validity of this type of characterization.
Racism again, blackface again. It’s very sad!
Circus on wheels
Blackface is racist and offensive because it evokes painful history. (…) We expect a public apology.
The publication of “The Guardian” received wide coverage in the media, which turned out to be important for everyone involved in the production. – Atmosphere on set [jest] nervous in general. They once wrote about us when talking about Drake, but not on such a scale. Now it has spread much more – reports the portal’s informant.
