So far, Agnieszka Holland has received almost exclusively positive reviews from critics, which in turn was reflected during the . Although the film did not win the Golden Lion, it was honored with four awards, including a special jury award.
Holland’s latest production is causing a sensation internationally. What issues does “The Green Border” address?
“The Green Border” is a film drama inspired by real events, the main plot of which is the situation of refugees on the Polish-Belarusian border. The black and white image presents the situation from three different perspectives. First of all, we get to know it from the perspective of refugees who fell victim to Lukashenko’s ruthless regime, as well as activists who are trying to get to the border forest at all costs to provide them with at least basic humanitarian aid. However, they must face border guards who try to conceal what is happening in the area surrounded by barbed wire.
The inhabitants of Otwock will not see the “Green Border”. The city mayor explains the decision
It will hit cinema screens in Poland on September 22, 2023. As soon as this information appeared in the media, some groups began to call for a boycott of the screenings, including: The Vistula Border Guard Unit, using the slogan “Only pigs sit in the cinema” known from the times of the German occupation. Now it turned out that the city of Otwock is also joining the opposition, as the picture has disappeared from the repertoire of the Oaza cinema. According to non-partisan councilor Ireneusz Paśniczek, the mayor of the city, Jarosław Margielski from PiS, is behind this decision. – The cinema and cultural center report directly to the president. What’s more: in exactly the same place Jarosław Margielski hosted leading PiS politicians. So someone had to call the director of the cultural center and force him to change the repertoire. So we are dealing with the beginnings of censorship introduced by a Law and Justice politician, he said.
The decision caused a scandal, and the city authorities were criticized. The City Hall Press Office decided to respond to the allegations, explaining that the changes in the repertoire are not an attempt at censorship, but a consequence of “sharing a cinema hall with a theater hall.” The screenings were supposed to conflict with previously planned rehearsals of the performances. – What can I say? I remember the times when cinemas showed untitled films in “reserved screenings”. And the recent ones, when the local government of Ostrołęka banned the showing of “Kleru” in the local cinema and a few weeks later PiS lost the local elections there. The thief has his hat on. I invite you to cinemas all over Poland, Holland said eloquently.
