The award for “The Green Border” changes nothing. Sebastian Kaleta thinks that Holland should apologize

Although Agnieszka Holland’s film entitled “The Green Border” gained recognition on the international arena, culminating in the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, Polish right-wing politicians still do not let up. Deputy Minister of Justice Sebastian Kaleta referred to Zbigniew Ziobro’s scandalous words about the production. In his opinion, the director should apologize because the head of the ministry has nothing to apologize for.

Agnieszka Holland’s announcement to create a film based on real events related to the migration crisis on the border of Belarus with the European Union was controversial among right-wing politicians from the very beginning. Among others, he spoke about the production in scandalous terms. Stanisław Żaryn, Krystyna Pawłowicz and Zbigniew Ziobro.

The latter’s words aroused the most controversy. Both because of their meaning and the important function that a politician performs in the country. In a humiliating post on the X website (formerly “Twitter”), he compared Agnieszka Holland to propagandists of the Third Reich. His words were covered by foreign media and people of culture who condemned this statement.

The director announced legal action against the Minister of Justice if he does not provide her with compensation within the agreed time. However, it turns out that Zbigniew Ziobro is unlikely to back down from his words. On Sunday, September 10, he was a guest of the Wirtualna Polska and Radio ZET program entitled “Game for votes” was Deputy Minister of Justice Sebastian Kaleta. The host Beata Lubecka decided to ask him if he would watch the film that received the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival the day before. The politician commented briefly: “I don’t watch cabarets.”

Later he began to explain that he had watched the trailer and read the reviews and that was enough for him to form an opinion about this production. He also stated that he was very embarrassed and that in his opinion Agnieszka Holland’s film was a propaganda film. “If this video is used by Putin and Lukashenko, then something is up,” Kaleta said. He also referred to Zbigniew Ziobro’s words, claiming that he only expressed his opinion and did not intend to apologize for it:

Agnieszka Holland should apologize to the uniformed officers, he emphasized.
