‘Poor things’, a fable of female liberation by Lanthimos, Golden Lion in Venice

Poor thingsthe fantastic fable of women’s liberation directed by the Greek Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, won this Saturday the Golden Lion for best film at the 80th Venice Film Festival.

The second most important prize, the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize, has gone to Evil does not exista hymn to the protection of nature directed by the Japanese Ryusuke Hamaguchi, the director of the Oscar-winning Doraibu mai ka (2022).

Lanthimos has triumphed with an adaptation of a novel by Scotsman Alasdair Gray about a woman who is brought back to life by a strange surgeon (Willem Dafoe) and by starting over from scratch she can face her life completely free, without shame or prejudice.

Another of the great winners of the Mostra has been the Italian Matteo Garrone, who has moved and shaken consciences with his story about sub-Saharan immigration Io capitanofor which he won the Silver Lion for best director.

– Marcello Mastroianni Award for best emerging performer: Seydou Sarr for Io Capitano.
– Golden Lion in the race: Liliana Cavani and Tony Leung Chiu-wai.
