Agnieszka Holland talks in Venice about the work of activists at the border

While accepting the Jury Award, Agnieszka Holland took the opportunity to talk about the work of non-governmental organizations and ordinary people who help refugees trapped in the Polish-Belarusian forest.

More than 60,000 people died trying to get to Europe. They are still hiding in the forests, deprived of dignity, human rights and security. Some of them will die, not because we have no way to help them, but because we do not want to help them. But both here, in Europe and in Poland, there are people who help and who know that their first duty is to be human. To all activists, people helping, the Granica Group, the Podlasie Humanitarian Emergency Service, organizations – from Poland to Lampedusa – thank you! – she said.

When the politicians criticizing the director became shocked after the awards were announced in Venice, the helpers got wind. Through social media, Agnieszka Holland thanks, among others, Piotr Czaban, a journalist reporting on activities at the border. Working with the Podlasie Voluntary Humanitarian Emergency Service, he has often observed what the work of medics at the border looks like and what they have to face:

Agnieszka Holland has always been there for people on the road, for us. No one else could have told better what has been happening on the Polish-Belarusian border for two years. The award for “The Green Border” at the Venice festival will once again remind us of the ongoing drama. Dear Mrs. Agnieszka remembered us – he wrote.
