Venice Film Festival. “Green Border” Holland with the Special Jury Prize!

Agnieszka Holland and her “Green Border” received the Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Festival on Saturday, September 9! Unfortunately, this probably closes the way to the main prize – the Golden Lion. Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly a huge success for the Polish film and for the director herself.

“The Green Border” leaves Venice with the Special Jury Award of the 80th Venice International Film Festival! We expected this news from the moment the film “The Green Border” was shown and equally huge criticism from the government in Poland. Although the Golden Lion was expected (which ultimately went to “Poor Creatures” by Yorgos Lanthimos), the Special Jury Prize was also taken into account.

Agnieszka Holland and “Zielona Granica” with the Golden Lion in Venice!

The nomination for “Green Border” is the third nomination in Venice for Agnieszka Holland. The previous ones – for “Julia Comes Home” (2002) and “Olivier, Olivier” (1992) ended with “only” participation in the Main Competition. And here it is finally here, “Zielona Border” wins not the main prize of the Competition, but an equally important distinction – the Special Jury Prize.

The film’s international success was met with enormous criticism from the government in Poland. “Green Border” shows the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border two years ago, when the Polish Border Guard used the push-back procedure in relation to refugees brought to illegal border crossings by the Belarusian side. People crossing the border in unauthorized places were pushed beyond it, forced by officers from Belarus to illegally cross it again, which ended with another illegal (as stated by the Provincial Administrative Court in Białystok) push-back.

In the film “The Green Border” we will see the perspective of both volunteers who help refugees, the refugees themselves, but also one of the Border Guard guards securing the Polish border. Maja Ostaszewska, Tomasz Włosok, Piotr Stramowski, Agata Kulesza, Maciej Stuhr, Magdalena Popławska, Jaśmina Polak and Marta Stalmierska and foreign actors took part in the production: Jalal Altawil, Behi Djanati Atai, Mohamad Al Rashi, Dalia Naous and Joely Mbundu.

Agnieszka Holland triumphs in Venice, in the background there is a conflict with Zbigniew Ziobro

The harshest criticism of Agnieszka Holland and her latest film. In a Twitter post, he compared the director to “Nazis”. Agnieszka Holland has already announced that she will file a lawsuit against the politician. “I declare that I have decided to react directly to Zbigniew Ziobro’s post published on September 4, 2023 on the X website (formerly Twitter), in which he compared me with propagandists of the Third Reich who showed Poles as bandits and murderers,” they wrote in statement of her attorneys.
