To a large extent, the amount of time spent in the garden now will determine the success of the next season. Because there are so many activities, you need to plan your time well – let’s also take into account the fact that the weather is not always favorable and rain can cause us difficulties.

What work is worth doing in September? The first of the autumn months is full of various and much-needed activities. In particular, it concerns:

• systematic removal of weeds, cutting out faded and loosening the soil; we also remove unattractive biennials and annuals;
• we dig up bulbs that are sensitive to low temperatures, dry them and prepare them for winter storage – e.g. gladioli or dahlias;
• we protect plants that have been grown on terraces so far and are sensitive to frost;
• we prepare water plants for wintering by cutting their shoots, sometimes we lower them to deeper places of the pond;
• we set up new lawns or improve the condition of old ones;
• we fertilize with substances that help plants prepare for winter – for example, autumn fertilizers stimulating lignification, e.g. with a high content of phosphorus, potassium; organic fertilizers with humus and valuable microelements are also used.

What about pruning? Do not delay it, because it could make it difficult for plants to prepare for winter. In September, in particular, the following may be pruned:

• Italian nuts;
• plums, cherries and sour cherries (only in the first part of the month);
• raspberries and blackberries;
• some plants in hedges – apart from conifers, these will be e.g. privet, barberry or bladderwort;
• narrow-leaved lavender;
• perennials such as phlox or rudbeckia.
