This year, it surprises its subscribers exceptionally, experimenting with new genres and forms. The library of the platform has just been enriched with another Polish production. This time it is the drama “Infamia” directed by Anna Maliszewska and Kuba Czekaj, whose plot is entirely devoted to the Roma community. However, it does not show it through the prism of stereotypes repeated for decades, but through a rich culture and tradition.
The mesmerizing story of a young Roma is already conquering Netflix. What is the series “Infamia” about?
The title of the series directly refers to what the plot is about, the word “infamia” from Latin means the loss of honor and good name. The main character is a 17-year-old Roma, Gita, who returns to Poland with her family after many years spent in Great Britain. A clash with a community in which it is perceived through the prism of harmful stereotypes is not easy. However, she tries to reconcile the life of a teenager with the traditions cultivated by her family. She does not stop dreaming of freedom, and her new life seems like a trap. Her worldview and approach to many things are in contradiction to what her relatives try to instill in her.
When her heart is stolen by a young man, everything starts to get complicated. – Family or infamy? – she is asked many times. However, she knows that none of the options will make her happy. In both, he has a lot to lose, after all, “a Roma without a family is nobody”. However, opposition to a chauvinistic world where women have no rights will be stronger than faithfulness to cultural ideals. What will she choose in the end and how will her fate turn out?

The cast of the series featured a plethora of excellent actors and rising stars of Polish cinema. The character of Gita was created by Zofia Jastrzębska, for whom it is the first major role on the screen in her career. In one of the interviews, she revealed that already at the casting stage there was a huge commitment to respecting the Roma and their culture. – From the very beginning, even during the castings, the series was created in cooperation with representatives of the Roma community and under the supervision of Dr. Joanna Talewicz-Kwiatkowska, who was the artistic supervisor for Roma culture – . Alongside her on screen we will also see m.in. Sebastian Łach, Magdalena Czerwińska, Kamil Piotrowski and Artur Dziurman.
