Before the official screening of “Green Border”, a press conference was held, during which a minute’s silence was held in honor of the refugees who have died trying to reach Europe since 2014. After the show, the applause did not stop for a quarter of an hour. The author of the video photos is Luiza Pietrzak:

In Agnieszka Holland’s film, three perspectives intertwine – refugees, Polish activists and border guards. “Green Border” is, as the creators say, a story about people – about people put in borderline situations. The script is fiction, deeply rooted in reality. Preparations for the film included hundreds of hours of document analysis, interviews with refugees, border guards, borderland residents, activists and experts. The screenplay was written jointly by Holland and director Gabriela Łazarkiewicz-Sieczko and writer Maciej Pisuk (writer of “You Are God”). Tomasz Naumiuk is responsible for the cinematography.

“Green Border”. What is the plot about?

After moving to Podlasie, psychologist Julia (Maja Ostaszewska) becomes an involuntary witness and participant in the dramatic events on the Polish-Belarusian border. Aware of the risks and legal consequences, she joins a group of activists helping refugees who are stranded in the forests of the emergency zone. At the same time, a Syrian family fleeing the civil war and their teacher from Afghanistan, not knowing that they are a tool of political deception by the Belarusian authorities, try to get to the borders of the European Union. In Poland, fate brings them together with Julia and a young border guard Jan (Tomasz Włosok). The events unfolding around them will force them all to ask themselves anew the question – what is humanity?

The film will hit Polish cinemas on September 22. On Saturday, September 9, during the closing gala of the festival in Venice, we will find out whether “Green Border” will win the Golden Lion. Among the 23 productions of the Main Competition there are e.g. new films by David Fincher and Sofia Coppola.
