PLN 150 for wishes on the radio and reservations one year in advance. “No one complained that it was too expensive”

Concerts of wishes are associated with the 1990s and early 2000s. It was then that radio Jedynka and Telewizja Polska aired programs in which listeners and viewers dedicated songs to relatives, friends or colleagues. The broadcast has survived to this day in two broadcasting stations. You have to pay a lot for your wishes.

“Television concert of wishes” on TVP1 could be watched until the 1990s. Broadcast on weekends, it attracted viewers in front of TV sets and enjoyed considerable popularity. Through it, wishes were made, accompanied by an occasional song. The news was read by the hosts. The broadcast was also broadcast on the air. Today, similar programs are broadcast on many television stations. This format has also survived on many radio stations, where the presenter reads messages from the listeners, and the listeners can telephone the antenna. However, the classic “wishing concert” can still be heard in two local Polish Radio stations: Radio Opole and Radio Kielce.

A concert of wishes on Radio Opole. The broadcast has existed for almost 70 years

Radio Opole listeners have been sending wishes through the broadcast since the beginning of the radio station’s existence, i.e. for almost 70 years. On Sunday afternoons, you can hear greetings, wishes on birthdays, name days, anniversaries, and even thanks to doctors for good care. A song is attached to the dedication. The host does not read out the names, unless the jubilarian or birthday person agrees in writing. The broadcast lasts two hours, but it is not always possible to fill it in its entirety. Today, listeners of Radio Opole have to pay PLN 80 for the possibility of submitting wishes via the station.

PLN 150 for a dedication on the air. The concert of wishes is a “missionary” broadcast

wishes on Radio Kielce is broadcast every Sunday, usually at 16:00, although there are shifts in the schedule. – I am 52 years old and to this day Sunday afternoons remind me of the smell of broth and listening to this broadcast as a child – recalls Marek Wtorek from Radio Kielce in an interview. As he emphasizes, the broadcast has enjoyed considerable interest for years. – Most of the wishes are made by listeners before Christmas. Then reservations are made up to a year in advance, he notes.

Although in theory listeners can ask for any song, and the track list provided on the Internet is only a suggestion, with some genres, such as disco polo, the station tries to be careful. Those who dedicated a song and wishes on the air receive a recording on a CD as a souvenir. The cost is PLN 150. The price seems high, but, as Marek Wtorek emphasizes, “no one complained that it was too expensive”. According to the Kielce radio station, the band with wishes implements the program assumptions of public media. – We treat this broadcast as missionary due to building intergenerational bonds. Children often greet their parents or grandparents. Even a bystander can be moved, he emphasizes.
