Polanski made the worst film of 2023? Critics: burns the eyes, failure of the decade, shoddy farce

Roman Polanski presented his latest work to the guests of the festival in Venice. “The Palace” may turn out to be the worst rated film of 2023. Currently, no reviewer has written anything good about the picture.

The Palace is the latest film from the director. The black comedy of the Polish artist seems to be set in current trends. The description is associated with the plot of critically acclaimed films such as “In the Triangle”, “The Menu”, “Glass Onion” or the TV series “White Lotus”. The creator tried to make a provocative comedy about rich people, guests of an exclusive hotel, who require the staff to satisfy their every whim.

Roman Polanski showed his “The Palace” in Venice. Is this the worst movie of the year?

The world premiere of the production took place during this year’s 80th Venice International Film Festival. Critics are disappointed with the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, the picture received 0% freshness, and reviewers did not leave a dry thread on it. Polañski’s latest work will be released in Italian cinemas in September. In Poland, the production still has neither a distributor nor a release date.

“This eye-burning atrocity instantly became one of the most glaring film failures of the year, if not the decade,” writes Kevin Maher of Britain’s Time in his review. “This movie seems to give the whole world the middle finger,” adds Ben Croll of TheWrap. In turn, Robbie Collin of the British Daily Telegraph draws attention to Polanski’s outdated sense of humor that is inadequate to our times. The critic notes: “It’s less about pointing out that you can’t joke like that anymore, it’s more about asking yourself why would anyone even want to do that?”

“Better drink something before the show.” Critics merciless for Polanski’s new film

Jo-Ann Titmarsh of the London Evening Standard argues that the film is not even defended by the legend of Polanski’s genius. Owen Gleiberman of Variety seems to confirm that the jokes in the film were indeed off the mark. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard such a deadly silence in a large cinema hall during the screening of a film that tried so hard to amuse everyone,” writes the critic.

“You may need a strong drink to last the entire screening of Roman Polanski’s new film, you may find that even a few – anything to ease the pain,” writes Polish director Xan Brooks of the Guardian, who titled his review “A shoddy hotel farce” Roman Polański is the worst party in town” and rated the film with one star. “A huge dud,” concludes Jordan Mintzer of the Hollywood Reporter. Rory O’Connor of The Film Stage, using a graphic metaphor, adds: “It’s a movie in bad taste, like wearing a mink coat. It doesn’t offer much in terms of entertainment and even less in terms of style.”
