“Sometimes you have to put it down and kick it in the four letters”
In 1963, Rinn decided to move to Warsaw. It happened after she ended a four-year marriage with a doctor, Andrzej Ryduch, who could not be faithful to her. Danuta Rinn owed her artistic pseudonym to her ex-husband. The singer’s real name was Smykla, and only after she became involved with the doctor did she introduce herself as “Rinn”, which was a kind of variation of her then-husband’s name.
When Rinn was already living in Warsaw, her musical skills caught the attention of singer Bogdan Czyżewski. The man took her under his wing, thanks to which the singer’s career began to gain momentum. They started performing in a duet as Czyżewski-Rinn and won the sympathy of the audience thanks to such hits as “Biedroneczki jest polka dots” or “Ask my mum about it”. The artists were an excellent duo not only on the stage, but also in private life. There was a deep feeling between Danuta and Bogdan, which they wanted to seal. The wedding of the two took place in March 1964. 28-year-old Danuta Rinn found happiness with a man with whom she shared her passion for music and career.
Rinn’s marriage to Bogdan Czyżewski ended after 10 years. It was not betrayals that separated them, but differences in views on the family. Danuta dreamed of children, but Bogdan did not share her desires. He preferred to tour rather than focus on building a house. Someone had to leave eventually. The singer decided to do it.
You have to decide when to leave at the right moment. Sometimes you have to put it down and kick four letters. Bogdan was able to make a tiny hole and drink all the blood so that no trace was left
– recalled Danuta Rinn, whose words she quotes.
Czyżewski recalled that despite the separation, he still kept in touch with Rinn.
Our paths parted, but we still kept in touch. Danusia never gave any indication that anything was wrong. She had a strong and powerful personality, she always had an opinion, like a real woman
– said the musician quoted by the portal.
“She was waiting for some job offers, but her phone did not ring”
After parting with Czyżewski, Danuta Rinn experienced a difficult period. Deteriorating well-being over time turned into depression. She focused on work, starting a solo career, however, in people’s minds, she was still a woman from the Czyżewski-Rinn duo. During her few performances, she had trouble remembering lines. From a smiling and cheerful woman, she turned into a stressed singer who, instead of shining, was embarrassed in the spotlight.
Everything was to change thanks to the song “Where are these men”. This is a piece by Jan Pietrzak, which was written for Irena Jarocka, and then was presented by Anna Nehrebecka and Kabaret pod Egidą. A few weeks after its premiere, the song was removed from the program. The composer Włodzimierz Korcz then knocked on Rinn’s door with the number ready.
I thought of Dance Rinn. She has just divorced Bogdan Czyżewski. She wasn’t in the best shape. She was waiting for some career offers, but her phone didn’t ring.
– recalled Korcz, whose words he quotes.
When the artist presented the song to Rinn, the woman said that she had been waiting for this song all her life. She started performing with her, but the beginnings were not easy. The artist was still struggling with depression, and she was not used to performing in front of a crowd again. To help herself, she performed with her back to the crowd.
Rinn fans fell in love with her interpretation of “Where are the men”. In 1974, she sang this song at the festival in Opole. Her performance met with great appreciation, thanks to which she won the award of the Society of Friends of Opole.
“I had a choice: either use this feature of mine or give up my profession”
In the 1970s, Rinn developed not only musically, but also acting. She appeared in such films as “Awards and Decorations”, “Doors in the Wall”, “Jealousy and Medicine”, “Heads Full of Stars” or “Doktor Murek”. During this period, she also established cooperation with Teatr na Targówek, appearing in “Who Wants a Song” or “On Behavior at the Table”. In later years, the actress was also associated with the Northern Theater. In 1979, she received the Silver Cross of Merit for her artistic activity.
Her career did not slow down. She released more songs, became a brand in her own right.
I didn’t think I was going to be a star, and when I did, I turned it into a joke. Maybe that’s why I wasn’t a threat to anyone, I never had professional conflicts, I didn’t feel jealous.
Rin recalled.
The artist was perceived as a cheerful and smiling person who does not follow the canons of beauty and fashionable styles. Rinn had no complexes, which aroused admiration among women. She accepted herself as she was, she did not want to change anything about herself, even though some people suggested to her that she should take care of herself. She spoke openly about her eternal love for food.
Everyone is afraid of getting fat, but not everyone knows what to do about it. In fact, I had a choice: either use this quality of mine or give up my profession. I am not afraid of being ridiculous when I sing about love, when I sing a lyrical or dramatic song. I just accepted myself as I am
– said Rinn quoted by the portal.
“Those old years came much sooner than I thought”
Career development and love affairs meant that Danuta Rinn never had children. However, she became the godmother of her friend’s daughter. Rinn’s goddaughter is Kinga Rusin.
Rinn was ill for the last years of her life. She had advanced diabetes and had to undergo a difficult operation. When at the hospital they asked who would pick her up, she replied that no one, because she had no family. In 2002, she decided to move to the House of Veteran Artists of Polish Stages in Skolimów.
I made the right decision when I decided to stay in Skolimów, and I have been aware for a long time that I will end up here in my old age. Only those old years came much sooner than I thought
– she said.
Danuta Rinn died on December 19, 2006 at the age of 70. The funeral took place three days later at Warsaw’s Powązki Cemetery. During the ceremony, a representative of the Chancellery of the President handed over the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta awarded by Lech Kaczyńskiwhich Rinn was unable to pick up earlier due to her health condition.
Danuta Rinn had a great sense of humor. Without a wit, a joke, a smile, she did not exist. And this joyful person got a terrible disease. We watched helplessly as it slowly faded away
– recalled Irena Santor.
