How did Jerzy Antczak come up with the idea to adapt Maria Dąbrowska’s novel to the screens? He was persuaded to do so by his wife, who heard in a radio broadcast how Gustaw Holoubek “read this book wonderfully”. She decided to share her fascination with her husband, and he was inspired by her enthusiasm. – I had a nose that the whole thing is worthy of attention – in “Fakt” years later. The actress knew from the beginning that she would like to create the character of Barbara. However, the director had to find a worthy partner who would perform with her in a duet. Initially, it was Stanisław Jasiukiewicz who withdrew from the project just before the shooting began. The reason was cancer. He died before the last slap on the set.

The director had to choose a new actor for the role of Bogumił Niechcic. He did not even consider it, but one of his friends suggested his candidacy. As soon as this information reached Barańska, she immediately began to support this idea. The actor made a great impression on her by playing in the play “Biesy”. Without thinking much, Antczak offered him to join the cast, and without any test shots. Bińczycki did not hide his surprise, especially since he was repeatedly told that “the camera does not like him”. “Director, I am not fit for the film. I burned all the test photos.
