Learn how to give your brand a purpose with Ismael Cal and José Alberto Hidalgo

It was the performance of the 53-year-old journalist for his first of three speeches. After being placed on stage, Cala used the space to thank him for the invitation and before getting down to business, he developed different dynamics with the audience, which they literally respected. First he asked them to dance, to activate, to release. He then had the audience play a question and answer game to break the ice between them. Perhaps few expected this kind of interaction, but everyone was happy to oblige and even laughed.

To illustrate the concepts of his first exhibition entitled The value of uniquenesswhere he talked about the importance of building a personal brand, Cala used his many work anecdotes.

Speaking about branding, the author referred to the concepts of memorability, authenticity, relevance, consistency and adaptability (intentional acrostic with brand initials). He emphasized authenticity and uniqueness, as the title says, and admitted that Cala, despite his renowned career as an interviewer, initially copied the style of another communicator, because in the professional world it is very common to imitate mentors, he said. and he was no exception.

“When I started my career at the age of 23, I imitated Franco Carbono, a Cuban television presenter. I had no authenticity and people knew, that’s why they told me charcoal“, he said between smiles. According to Cali, he doesn’t really like the comparisons made in the media, where he has been called the next John Maxwell (anchor writer) or the Latino Larry King (journalist interviewer), because he feels that it diminishes the authenticity of his name.

“I appreciate being told that I am the Latino Larry King, as he puts it The New York Times in the article, because he was my mentor. But I’m not a Latino Larry King, nor am I interested in that, I’ve already passed that stage… then I happened to hang out with Deepak Chopra, who I saved in time,” shared the writer, alluding to the collaboration he had with the Indian speaker, when has dubbed his popular meditations for Hispanic audiences. “They started calling me Latino Chopra, but I don’t want to be that. I am Ismael Cala and we even talk about different topics, I have my own meditations”.

The project with Chopra was possible thanks to his network networkingalthough at first, he admitted, he was on the idea of working networking (practice for making and gaining professional contacts) was suspicious to him. It seemed to him that the events were creating “forced relationships.” But he no longer thinks that way, he admitted, since he had a very warm experience networking with one of his interlocutors, something he didn’t expect to happen because of the image he had of the person.

‘Neural Quiropraxia’ premieres its third season, with Ismael Cal as a guest on the program

“A first and last name that is a global brand, Carolina Herrera. Before the interview with her, it was difficult for me to humanize her, to feel that I would be uncomfortable with her, because I saw her so flawless, so flawless, with a white blouse and a pearl necklace. I just wanted to have a warm conversation with her,” Cala recalled.

“After an hour of the interview, Carolina was leaving and I said to her ‘thank you for being here, it was a pleasure, I think it was a conversation between friends.’ And she said to me ‘when you go to New York, please let me receive you in my office on Fifth Avenue’. I asked him: ‘and who should I write to?’. She said to me: ‘me, write down my cell phone’. I couldn’t believe it!”. According to the communicator, she didn’t immediately write to the fashion designer until after three or four months. “I was ashamed, I was sorry”. Encouraged by colleagues, he finally contacted Herrera and they agreed to the promised meeting.

“I want to tell you this because an opportunity for friendship emerged from one conversation. Years have passed and I write to Karolina all the time, and she answers me. When the 50th anniversary of the founding of Ismael Cala came around, I said to her ‘Carolina, do you want to put one of your things up for auction’. Delighted, he responded and sent a limited edition bag free of charge.

This positive experience made him appreciate networking with a true purpose. “When you focus on the fact that your network of relationships has to be really authentic, with people you connect on a deeper level, rather than on the interest of looking for something, everything immediately falls into place. It’s about not being stupid and knowing when someone approaches out of interest”.

He also recalled another memory along these lines: “One of the things I enjoyed most when I left CNN It’s that my phone stopped ringing so much, from people who don’t interest me. It was a great relief. That phone rang every day to people who didn’t want to be friends with Ismael Cal, they were only interested in appearing on the program.

Ismael Cala’s intervention, which lasted about an hour and a half, culminated in one of his meditations, which lasted about 10 minutes and included breathing exercises. It was also a welcome experience for the participants. (AND)
