Why aren’t tomatoes red?

There are several reasons why tomatoes are not beautifully red. What is worth paying attention to?

  • Temperature. The tomato ripens best and turns red at 16 to 26 degrees Celsius. If kept below 15 degrees, the ripening process will stop. On the other hand, tomatoes will also be affected by temperatures above 30 degrees.
  • Fertilization. At the beginning, it is worth supplying tomatoes with nitrogen fertilizer (slurry, manure), and later, during the ripening period, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer (banana peels).
  • Watering. Do not overdry the tomatoes. It is worth watering regularly, not wetting the leaves and fruits, which promotes the development of diseases.
  • Diseases. If the tomato does not turn red, it is possible that it has been attacked by dry top rot. The disease is caused by a lack of calcium. The frequency of watering the plant should then be increased.
  • Not enough light. If the tomatoes thrive in the shade, pick them before they change color. Then they will mature at home.

How to make tomatoes red? Simple treatments will work

If you want to improve the ripening of tomatoes on the bush, regularly, even daily, remove small amounts of leaves and twigs that have not set fruit. Then the plant will be able to focus on providing nutrients to the fruit in greater amounts. In addition, use home-made fertilizers that ensure lushness, growth and faster reddening. Coffee grounds, egg shells and banana peels will work.
