When to plant strawberries in the ground? It depends on the variety
Strawberries are very easy to grow, so if you have a piece of garden, it is worth growing them. The timing of planting these delicious fruits depends on their variety. Green seedlings are usually dug up in early spring and early spring, and that’s when you can buy them and transplant them to your garden. It is best to do it from the beginning of September until the first frost, i.e. even November or December, or from mid-March (more precisely, when they start growing) to May. Just keep in mind that they will produce profusely only in the second year after planting. In turn, frigo seedlings, which are dug up in winter, should be planted in spring and summer, no later than mid-July. It takes 7-8 weeks for them to start to bear fruit profusely.
Where to plant strawberries? Prepare the site accordingly
Before you start planting, make sure that the position in which they will grow is properly prepared and weed free. First of all, do not grow them in the place of tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, raspberries, cabbage or peppers, which attack similar pests. In addition to this, make sure the soil is fairly moist, and if not, water it the day before planting. Strawberries grow best in well-drained soil, with a pH of 5.5-6.5, and a sunny place, sheltered from the wind.
How to plant strawberries? Pay attention to that
The day after watering the bed, you can start planting strawberries. To do this, prepare small holes that will perfectly accommodate the root of the seedling. Dig them about 20-30 cm apart and place the plant in each so that it is upright and the green shoots stick out just above the surface. After planting, gently compact the soil around the bush. When you are done with all the seedlings, it is a good practice to mulch, which will protect the plants from drying out and weeds. However, this is not necessary. For this, do not forget to water them abundantly. In the absence of rain, do it regularly, even daily.
