Jack Sonni, former Dire Straits guitarist, died on August 30, 2023. The musician collaborated with the band during the recording of the album “Brothers in Arms” and the memorable Live Aid concert. He was 68 years old.

In the late 1980s, Jack Sonni gave up his music career to work in marketing. After years of hiatus, he returned to the stage. He joined the band Dire Straits Legacy, playing the works of the legendary British band.

Information about the artist was provided by colleagues from the band Dire Straits Legacy, in which former musicians of the legendary group performed, including Phil Palmer and Alan Clark. In a post published on social media, they said goodbye to Sonnie.

Our beloved Jack has left a void in our hearts and souls. We will miss you very much. You will stay with us forever

– they wrote in a post published on the band’s Facebook profile. A few days ago, they announced that due to health issues, Sonni would not perform at any more Dire Straits Legacy shows. The cause of death was not given.

He played with Dire Straits at Wembley. He gave up his career for marketing

Jack Sonni was born on December 9, 1954 in the United States. He was interested in music from an early age. He learned to play the piano, trumpet, and finally at the age of 14 he fell in love with playing the guitar. He dropped out of literary studies for music. In the late 1970s, Sonni began performing with the band The Leisure Class. In 1978 he started working in a music shop and it was there that he met the Knopfler brothers, who invited him to London. After David Knopfler and Hal Lindes left Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler asked Sonnie to participate in the recording sessions for the album “Brothers in Arms”. The guitarist played a part in the song “The Man’s Too Strong”. He also played during the tour promoting the album. His most notable performance was the Dire Straits concert at Live Aid in 1985 at London’s Wembley Stadium. In 1988, when the guitarist’s twin daughters were born, Sonni decided to give up his musical career. For years he worked in marketing. He returned to acting a few years ago. He performed in Dire Straits Legacy and his first band, The Leisure Class.
