Poznań goats have been an element of the town hall tower since the 16th century and one of the city’s tourist attractions. Every day at 12:00 on the tower of the Poznań City Hall, the driving mechanism starts, thanks to which they butt each other with their horns. The current device (drive mechanism and figures) was funded by a Poznań entrepreneur, Marian Marcinkowski, who died on August 30 at the age of 84.
His goats have been butting each other in Poznań for 30 years
The device funded by Marcinkowski worked for the first time on June 12, 1993. The previous restoration of the billy goats was in 1954, so the mechanism was worn out. The new mechanism has been developed since 1989 – Dr. Eng. Stefan Krajewski from the Department of Machine Tool Design and Automation of the Institute of Machine Building Technology of the Poznań University of Technology. The aluminum sheet trestles were made by people from the Technical Metrology Department of the same Institute, headed by prof. Jan Chajda. The design team was led by Ryszard Urbaniak, and the main assembler of the device was Zdzisław Sajna. Some of the details were made by employees of Zakłady Cegielski.
He founded new goats out of love
Unfortunately, when the political system changed, it turned out that there was no money in the city’s treasury and it was ordered to look for a sponsor. It was then that Marcinkowski, co-owner of the “Władysław Marcinkowski” butchery, reappeared on the scene, and in the 1980s, he started repairing the trestles. The entrepreneur was in love with Elwira Modlibowska, who worked at the Town Hall. – It became an inspiration for me to first renovate the trestles and then fund new ones – Marcinkowski told Filip Czekała in “Stories worth knowing”. He was to pay for the new goats partly with money and partly with sausage. Modlibowska became his wife.
– I requested that the goats come out dressed in black on the day of my funeral. The manager of the museum promised me that the words of my testament would be fulfilled – said Czekale in 2015, who is now Marcinkowski on TVN24. The museum kept its word.

Funeral ribbons are worn for the first time in their centuries-old history. Previously, they were dressed, for example, in the club colors of Lech and Warta Poznań. Other disguises can be found in the photo gallery at the top of the article.
