I have been detoxing for 2 months. My life changed and I saved a lot of money

But not the way you think. It’s about makeup detox. At the beginning I thought that I would give up painting only for the summer – because it’s hot and it flows, and it smudges, it still needs to be touched up… I didn’t want too much burden the skin. The effect, however, delighted me so much that I decided to completely abandon the foundation, highlighter, powder or bronzer – and I liked to contour my cheekbones strongly. Now I know that was a mistake much better bet on a natural look.

The results of even a week of giving up makeup give a lot to think about. After the first few days my skin reacted quite radically. In the end, I gave her an equally radical change. At the very beginning, I must emphasize that I never applied too much makeup, but I applied foundation – also called fluid – every day. No wonder that after getting rid of this daily barrier, the following started to appear: blemishes, clogged pores (more and more pores at the beginning …), excessive production of sebum (I have oily skin type), small cysts, irritations, discoloration.

Fortunately, it only lasted a few days. Later, I could (and still can!) enjoy nourished, cleansed and smooth skin, without any skin changes. Sound unreal? I realize that, but that’s the way it is! It is worth noting, however, that the desired effect was achieved in combination with regular, careful care with appropriate preparations and avoiding exposure of delicate facial skin to the sun. The basis of care, of course, was (is and will be) daily application of cream with SPF filter. But more on the details in a moment.

More and more women are giving up makeup, and many journalists and lifestyle influencers describe their makeup detox experiences online. One of the trendsetters no make up in Poland is Martyna Kaczmarek – body positive influencer, model and writer who promotes feminist values. It is true that we have mostly become accustomed to seeing women in full make-up. So a completely natural look – which by the way is something totally normal! – we naturally see it less often in the public space and in the media. Fortunately, our approach in this aspect is changing and is going for the better.

Here it is also worth noting that in this text I speak from the perspective of a person who has never struggled with serious skin problems. This is important, because it is incomparably more difficult to give up or limit makeup when you have problematic skin. The experience of such a person who undertook a make-up detox will be completely different. However, only from my perspective, I can say that it’s worth it

I haven’t used makeup in almost months. My skin is clean, smooth and nourished

Every day for over 46 days, I leave my skin in the version sauté. Which does not mean that I do not emphasize my eyelashes with mascara or my lips with lipstick or lip gloss. However, the skin is undergoing a make-up detox, the effects of which I hope to enjoy for a long time. But to the point:

skin care has always been an important part of my daily routine, but in the face of makeup detox, I focused mainly on it. I believe that for oily skin – which I am a happy or unhappy owner of – it is very recommended. As with any other type of skin.

That’s why I made sure that every evening and morning care ritual starts with gentle cleansing – in my case, with a special washing gel. Then I wash it off with lukewarm water and dry my skin completely. The second stage is the application of serum (with vitamins E and C – beneficial for the condition of the skin, and retinol). Then a deep moisturizing cream, in the evening also a brightening, moisturizing eye cream. Lastly, mentioned earlier cream with SPF filter. Necessarily!

When writing about the benefits that makeup detox gave me, it is also worth dealing with a few myths that circulate in public space from time to time. Especially with one of the main ones: makeup is all evil. Or that wearing makeup on a daily basis accelerates the aging of skin cells. Nothing more wrong! Make-up is an element of everyday life of many women and men and an individual choice of each person. However, demonizing it to this extent is overkill – especially when it is completely wrong.

According to experts, the effect is the opposite. The magazine “Elle” in one of the articles devoted to the subject of make-up detox recalls the words of a well-known celebrity dermatologist. Its services include singer and actress Demi Lovato.

The truth is that makeup – appropriately matched to your skin type – is a barrier against harmful UV rays. It is an additional barrier that strengthens the protective properties of the cream with a filter

– says the specialist, quoted by Elle.pl. He also adds that – something we should all be aware of these days – that the main cause of skin aging is UV radiation. Although the undisputed impact on the condition of our skin also has m. diet, lifestyle, genetics, smoking and age, it is the sun that most contributes to the formation of wrinkles.

The biggest enemy of young skin is the sun. Therefore, foundation or powder act as additional protection

Renée Rouleau explained. However, let’s remember – fluid (even with SPF filter) is not the same as pure cream with SPF filter, which is why the word “additional” is crucial here. The latter is the absolute number one in everyday skin care.

If you use the right fluid, enriched with nourishing oils, vitamins and minerals, it can even help improve the condition of your skin and maintain its proper level of hydration – especially in the case of dry or mature skin. However, there is one cosmetic sin that no dermatologist will forgive: sleeping with makeup on. Before going to bed, remove any traces of foundation from your mouth.

Make-up detox – is it worth it?

Nevertheless, I insist on repeating: it’s worth taking a break from makeup. Among other things, because many cosmetics – even those from the so-called high-end, mainly colored ones – although their composition improves over time, they still contain parabens, dyes and other substances that can irritate, burden or clog pores on our skin. Thus, they can block the free flow of oxygen, and the skin, like any other organ of our body, should “breathe”. I deliberately use quotation marks here, because it is more about relieving it from the daily layers of wallpaper. It is known that gas exchange does not occur through the skin.

Therefore, even for a short break from wallpaper, your skin will thank you in two ways. The first point is Purification. Of course, there are no effects on the first day, but as I mentioned above – in combination with systematic care, your skin will become smooth, delicate, firm and full of glow. It will get better every day.

The second thing is significant reducing the visibility and size of pores and blemishes – less specifics on the skin, and therefore less dirt. Of course, this does not exempt us from the ritual of daily cleansing.

Make-up detox will also have a significant impact on you the color of our skin. Interestingly, it will also contribute to the return to its natural shade. It can be disturbed by the cosmetics used so far.

Why is it worth taking a longer break from makeup? Here are 6 main benefits

  • hydration. Due to the fact that I focused on care rituals, I constantly took care of the proper level of skin hydration.
  • Improving the appearance of the skin. I already wrote about this above. I would add brightening, greater skin elasticity, getting rid of discoloration and other minor skin changes. The only thing I’ve had a bigger problem with so far is the occasional papular changes. Now? No trace of these unwanted guests. Speaking of improving the appearance of the skin, I objectively list the changes that have taken place. I don’t judge what I look like without makeup, because it’s not a challenge at all.

  • Improvement of the condition of eyebrows and eyelashes. Although I sometimes “pull up” my eyelashes with mascara (very rarely), I gave them a long break from cosmetics anyway. I use castor oil every night. As a result, they are denser and stronger, and their shade is more expressive.
  • Listening to the signals coming from the skin and understanding its needs. Although it sounds a bit enigmatic, it is the most important benefit that my makeup detox has brought me. As I mentioned above, I have oily skin, so in my case the cellular exchange is hindered by the overproduction of sebum. For this reason, since I can remember, I have been using matte and covering foundations. And here comes the problem, because they are usually heavy and, unfortunately, often based on silicones. This slows down the process of cell exchange even more, and often results in the formation of delicate inflammations. So you can imagine the relief my skin felt when I just put them on. My goal is long-term: I plan to stop using foundation altogether.
  • Better mood. I don’t think much needs to be explained here. It is pure pleasure to watch how proper care for the skin – and indeed ourselves – results in effects beyond our expectations. So it puts you in a good mood.

  • Time. I guess it’s obvious. Minutes saved on applying makeup and then removing it really make life easier.
  • Saved money! I save the cosmetics that I had before the detox for special occasions and I don’t buy any new products. Not to mention the fact that I save on the foundation itself – the previous product I bought cost me about PLN 200 (rich in minerals, strongly matting). Similarly with the powder, although this one was more than half the price.

And at the very end, it is worth mentioning – although this is, of course, not the most important – that the so-called low make-up and no make up are in fashion now. More and more stars are also choosing to show themselves in a more natural version, and there are m.in. e.g. Selena Gomez, Salma Hayek, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sharon Stone, Millie Bobby Brown, Amanda Seyfried and Rihanna.
