Shakira will make history in the MTV Video Music Awards 2023 on September 12, when she becomes the first South American artist to receive the Video Vanguardia Award. The Colombian-born superstar becomes the second Latin artist to receive this important award. Born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, Jennifer Lopez received the honor five years ago.
Shakira will also perform at the VMAs for the first time in 17 years. This is in line with a recent VMA tradition. Starting with Justin Timberlake in 2013the Video Vanguard award was accompanied by an elaborate performance by the recipient, typically including a career-spanning medley of hits.
Shakira will most likely perform her 2023 hit TQGa collaboration with Carol G. who debuted and reached the position number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March. Karol G has already been announced as a featured performer on this year’s show (along with Demi Lovato, Maneskin and Stray Kids).

The VMA 2023 will be broadcast live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday, September 12 at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific Time. Shakira has been nominated four times for this year’s VMAs. She has been nominated for artist of the year; Best Latin and Best Collaboration for TQG; and again the best Latin for Acrostic.
