Not everyone realizes that hydrangeas can shed or lose their leaves due to three serious reasons. If you’ve noticed leaf fading, pay attention to these examples:
- Improper soil pH. Hydrangea will be intensely blue in very acidic soils and pink in alkaline soils. Hydrangea color change and fading may therefore result from inadequate acidity of the substrate.
- Natural discoloration. Sometimes the fading of a bouquet hydrangea can be caused by the plant’s natural development cycle.
- Pest feeding. We are talking about the hop spider mite, which feeds until about mid-August on the undersides of leaves. It sucks the sap, causing the plant to turn pale and the leaves to dry and fall off.

In the case of soil pH, you can change it and thus get the desired color of hydrangeas. If you’re interested in an intense blue, sprinkle the ground with eggshells or coffee grounds. For pink flowers, add more lime to the soil.
If the hydrangea has been attacked by pests, there is also a solution. Prepare a home spray for the spider mite and it will drop off the leaves quickly. What should I do? Mix two tablespoons of gray soap with two tablespoons of cooking oil and four liters of water. Spray the affected plant thoroughly and repeat the treatment every 4-7 days until the spider mites are completely eliminated.
