Unacem entered the Ecuadorian market in 2014 after taking over the operations of the French cement company Lafarge for $553 million.

Meanwhile, this new operation, which is subject to assessment by California state antitrust authorities, would mean that the Peruvian group doubles its total installed production capacity in the American Southwest, reaching 2 million tons of cement per year.

Located in the Tehachapi Mountains of Kern County, California, the plant has an installed capacity of 1 million short tons of cement and 0.9 short tons of clinker. The group reported that the acquisition will be carried out directly with bank financing.

For Pedro Lerner, CEO of Unacem Group, the acquisition of Tehachapi represents an opportunity to strengthen the group’s presence in the southwestern North American market. “Tehachapi would join our operation and strengthen our regional presence. If this transaction is approved, the United States would become the second country in Unacem Group’s installed capacity, and also as a generator of revenue and EBITDA, after Peru,” said the CEO.
