The identification number (Universal Electronic Population Registration System) is assigned to us in the first weeks after birth and we usually use it throughout our lives. Specifies the date of our birth and gender. It helps to register for medical facilities, obtain a prescription and is important in many situations where someone wants to make sure of our identity. Although few people know about it, in some cases the number may change. In which? We suggest.

Is it possible to change the PESEL number? In these cases it is possible
The number can only change in a few specific cases:
- change of date of birth or gender reassignment;
- due to incorrect information provided when assigning the PESEL number (misleading the official as to identity);
- due to a mistake of an official when entering data (incorrect date of birth or gender).
If the PESEL number is assigned due to the creation of a new birth certificate, for example as a result of a child, we do not have to report anything. The official will take care of assigning a new number himself. If there has been a change of date of birth or gender reassignment, documents confirming this should be prepared and sent to the Systems Management Department at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The service is free of charge, and you should wait up to 30 days from the date of delivery of the letter for its implementation.
Who can change PESEL? These people are dealing with it
The change of the PESEL number takes place thanks to the minister responsible for computerization. An application for a change may be submitted by:
- Head of the registry office — if you are changing your date of birth or gender reassignment by court order, or intending to correct a clerical error.
- Municipal office — if he made a mistake while entering data into the system or the employee was misled as to the identity of a given person.
- Ministry of Digitization — if the application was submitted before March 1, 2015 directly to the Ministry of Digitization.
