Until 2013, the Polish music market was stagnant and drought, but then you could already feel the wind of upcoming changes. It was in this year that Dawid Podsiadło released his debut album, which definitely stood out from what other native artists released at the time. For comparison – in the same year, Rafał Brzozowski released his first single, which, compared to Podsiadło, did not bring anything fresh to the world of pop music.
2013 is not yet the beginning of a new era in pop, but it was already heard that it was coming
On the other hand, the foreign music market was still dominated by dance-pop compositions and mediocre ballads, and rap was not as popular as it is now. But ten years ago, artists whose sounds broke the mold and caused that a few years later the world of mainstream music did not look the same anymore.
However, in this text, I want to remind you of three big hits that dominated the charts in 2013, and I honestly hated them, despite my love of pop. Only after some time I started to listen to them again and now I listen to them all with great pleasure.
Bruno Mars “When I Was Your Man”
At the outset, let me say that I liked this song not because of the reference to it in the song “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus. Ten years ago, I thought this hit was terribly clichéd, and although it’s not a typical Boyzone-style “bedding”, that’s how I felt about it. Even the Grammy Award for “Best Solo Performance – Pop” for this song didn’t matter at the time. Only years later did my ears hear the tragic beauty and sincerity emanating from this composition. I’d even venture to say that it’s now my favorite Bruno Mars song, which is soothing and at the same time makes me want to shout its lyrics along with the vocalist.
Mike WiLL Made-It feat. Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J “23”
This song was not a big hit in Poland (like most songs of this type, anyway), but it resonated widely around the world. Mainly because of Miley Cyrus’s harsh image at the time, who wanted to stop being associated with being a well-behaved Disney star. In 2013, I thought the song was “”, and besides, I was then in strong opposition to the then ubiquitous “SWAG” (prominence for expensive clothes). He just annoyed me. Now I think it’s one of the coolest party bangers of the last decade, which, despite the passage of time, sounds much fresher today than ten years ago.
Eminem feat. Rihanna “The Monster”
Duets of rappers and singers from the United States flooded native radio stations from all over the world. In this case, we were dealing with a legendary rapper and already established pop star, whom I really liked individually, but their previous track together (“Love The Way You Lie”) did not grab me. It was the same with “The Monster”, where I thought everything was flowing together, including the chorus. Today I consider it a masterpiece. It’s energetic and catchy, and the song doesn’t feel bland anymore. I can recognize her by one note!
