Dave Grohl quit music after Cobain’s death. A chance meeting changed the decision

Dave Grohl in the program Graham Norton talked about the difficult time after the death of Kurt Cobain. He confessed that after the tragedy he was unable to listen to music, let alone create it. Everything changed when he left town and met a hitchhiker.

Dave Grohl is a well-known drummer who, together with Kurt Cobain, formed the legendary line-up of Nirvana. After the death of the band’s lead singer, he founded the Foo Fighters, took over the microphone and again achieved international success. On The Graham Norton Show, the musician said that history could have turned out completely differently if not for a certain accident.

Dave Grohl fell in love with punk rock at the age of 13. “I WAS IN PARADISE”

In an interview with the host, Grohl revealed that he never took drum lessons. He admitted that he listened to records, plastered the walls with posters, and his life changed when, at the age of 13, he came across a concert in Chicago. A punk rock band played in the club. They had a tiny stage, two lights and 50 people under the stage. “Everywhere glasses flew, vomit, PARADISE, I WAS IN PARADISE” – the musician joked.

“This is rock’n’roll” thought young Dave and he wanted to stand on a similar stage one day. The artist dropped out of school and started a band. The host was curious what the star’s parents thought. Grohl explained that his father was quite a conservative man and his mother taught in a public school. Dad, after his son’s decision, put a dot on him, and mom only marked “may he be good at it”.

“Nirvana changed your life. It changed the world,” Graham Norton remarked during the interview. Grohl explained that while the band didn’t last long, there was a lot going on in music and the world at the time. People started to realize that it was okay to be yourself. “When it ended, I had to figure out what to do next with my life,” the drummer confessed, recalling the difficult time.

Norton pulled the subject and reminded Grohl that after his suicide, the artist gave up. He did not want to pursue a musical career. The host of the show was curious about what made Grohl change his mind and form the Foo Fighters. The artist nodded at Norton’s words. “I couldn’t even listen to music. I turned off the radio, put down my instruments. Listening to music hurt too much,” he said. Then he decided to visit his favorite place on earth, isolated from the world, and got into the car.

He saw a hitchhiker on the road. He decided to invite him to the car and give him a ride. “As I got close to him, I noticed he was wearing a Kurt Cobain shirt,” Grohl said. “Even in the most remote place I could be, I can’t escape it,” the musician realized. And then he made a decision. “Okay, I’m going home and starting over. And that’s how the Foo Fighters story began.”
