is the undisputed legend of rock for over half a century. The band has sold approximately 300 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling artists in history. In 1990, the group received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to the History of British Music, and in 2018 the formation received the Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Queen’s last album was released in 1995. “Made in Heaven” is the only studio album released under the banner of the band after the death of Freddie Mercury. Since 2011, the formation has been operating under the name Queen + Adam Lambert with a new vocalist. However, artists regularly release new compilations with great hits from years ago.
Hit Queen removed from the cult compilation. The media accuses the body-positive movement of censorship
Queen’s best-selling hits compilation to date is 1981’s Greatest Hits. The album includes 19 compositions (American edition), including the greatest hits of the legend such as “We Will Rock You”, “We Are the Champions”, “Another One Bites the Dust”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “I Want to Break Free” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”. One of the hits was missing on the new version of the compilation.
Queen’s songs found their way to Yoto’s platform aimed at children. “It’s a great introduction to Queen’s music for young music lovers, and the perfect soundtrack for dancing in the kitchen, singing on the patio or imitating guitar at bedtime,” the album’s description reads. At the same time, the platform warns young listeners that some of the content contained in the songs is not worth imitating and should be treated only as an element of art, not a guide to life. “Please note that the lyrics of some of these songs are intended for adults, contain references to violence and drugs. These are original and unedited recordings. Although we will not find swear words here, we recommend that younger children listen to the songs under the supervision of their parents,” advises the service.
Despite this introduction, one of the songs known from previous releases of the compilation did not make it to the platform. We are talking about the track “Fat Bottomed Girls”, one of Queen’s songs, which is considered extremely vulgar and inappropriate. Yoto’s website did not explain why this song was not included on the website, but it is enough to analyze its content to make the matter clear. “Girls with fat butts!” – exclaims Freddie in the song, and the media has already attributed the censorship to the body-positive movement – but is it right? An eloquent comment appeared on the website of “Daily Maila”.
It’s all because of the woke culture
“Why like this cute, fun song is not accepted by modern society? This is when the woke culture (refers to a socio-political movement that focuses on raising awareness about inequality and discrimination in society – editor’s note) goes wild. Why can’t we appreciate people of all shapes and sizes as they say we should?” “fat butts” can be very harmful to the youngest listeners of the song.
“I was just a skinny boy, I didn’t know right from wrong. But I knew life before I left nursery. I was left alone with big fat Fanny, she was a shameless nanny. Great woman, you made me such a bad boy!” – sounds one of the verses of “Fat Bottomed Girls”. The fragment can of course be a metaphor, but the decision of the children’s platform seems reasonable.
Here we hear a clear suggestion that the lyrical subject of the song’s babysitter sexually abused him when he was still in kindergarten. The reprehensible behavior of “fat Fanny” was turned into a joke and even presented in a positive light. Normalizing sexual harassment can have dire consequences, especially when such content is aimed at children. The youngest trust adults, they often cannot judge whether their behavior is right. Hence, for example, the phenomenon of deferred disclosure, which Prof. Maria Beisert.
“The child does not realize for a long time that something bad has happened to him”
“The whole process starts with internal disclosure, when the victim begins to realize that something inappropriate has happened. This is especially true for children. This does not necessarily happen on the day of the abuse or shortly after. when young children are abused, that the child does not know that something inappropriate has happened” – says the expert. “Especially if the perpetrator is someone close to whom he trusts. The perpetrator can prepare the victim in such a way that the child does not realize for a long time that something bad has happened to him” – he adds.
To rate, censor or ban Queen’s songs for choosing to publish such a song is indeed an exaggeration. The work was performed in 1978, when the awareness of certain phenomena was much lower. However, with today’s knowledge, it is worth talking about similar content, verifying it, and above all, protecting and sensitizing younger generations to it.
