Andrzej Chyra has no hesitation in defending Polanski. “He didn’t kill anyone”

Andrzej Chyra used Roman Polañski’s birthday to share some enlightened thoughts on the director’s deeds with his Instagram followers. He called the rape of a 13-year-old a “slip”.

On his 90th birthday, Andrzej Chyra decided to recall his most famous works. A series of photos from the book about the director, “Polanski Portrait of a Master”, appeared on the actor’s Instagram. Unfortunately, the pictures did not end, because Chyra got into a fiery discussion in the comments. Yes, it was about “cancel culture”, downplaying rape and feminists.

Andrzej Chyra defends Roman Polanski

On August 18, Roman Polański celebrated his 90th birthday. One of the most famous Polish directors has been living in France for years – he still creates, but at the same time he avoids the American justice system, which has been prosecuting him since 1978 for raping a 13-year-old girl. Polanski’s contribution to world culture is undeniable, but there has been a discussion for years about his responsibility for the act of 1977. When asked about this issue, Andrzej Chyra decided to defend the director.

Under the post from Sunday, it was only on Monday that a discussion flared up about whether Polański-director could be separated from Polanski-rapist. Andrzej Chyra also took the floor. In numerous comments, he mentioned “life stumbles”, downplayed that Polański “didn’t kill anyone” and finally spiced up “making a career on accusations”.

“The tabloid look at the Creators, i.e. through life’s stumbles and falls, is becoming the domain of feminists” – he stated in one of the comments. He extended the thought in the next and the next:

I am for feminism that does not become devotionalism, i.e. deleting everything that these ruthlessly militant feminists do not accept and creating exclusionary narratives. I see you destroying the community, and many of them make a career out of accusations. Because this is where Internet lynchings take place, cancel culture in bloom! – added.

When asked directly if “it’s okay [Polańskiemu] rape and now run away from responsibility because he is a great director”, Chyra stated that he “does not know the act”:

I am not a hypocrite, but the actors and actresses who know the history and who played with him and were proud of it now reproach him – also Polish, including my friends – this is hypocrisy. I don’t know the files, he didn’t kill anyone, he’s been forgiven, but how can you make yourself feel better by blaming one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema. Hypocrisy and piety – summed up Chyra.

The director is on trial for raping a 13-year-old girl. Polanski pleaded not guilty to the charges and served 42 days in prison. When information emerged that the judge was going to extend his prison sentence “for 100 years”, the artist fled the USA. In the following years, he made a settlement with Samantha Geimer, who said several times that she had forgiven him for the rape. However, the case has not expired or been invalidated. The American judiciary tried several times to extradite Polanski to the USA – unsuccessfully. Polanski was also accused by other women of rape and sexual abuse.
