Barbara Połomska was born in 1934 in Bydgoszcz. Her parents wanted her to apply for dentistry, but she wanted to be chic on screen. She graduated from the Krakow theater school without much difficulty, and two years later she played her first role in Wanda Jakubowska’s The Atlantic Tale.

Her career took off almost immediately. The directors were eager to cooperate with her. During the screening of “Warszawska Syrena”, in which she played, she caught the attention of Andrzej Munk, who decided to cast her in the cult “Eroica”, and later in “Bad Happiness”. She also appeared in films by Jerzy Kawalerowicz and Janusz Zaorski. It turned out to be significant for her international career. She played, among others in the Yugoslav picture “A Star Goes South” or the Czechoslovak comedy “Call My Wife”. – She was invited to festivals, although in those days permission to travel for the so-called the iron curtain bordered on a miracle. And Basia was one of the first Polish actresses to visit a piece of foreign film territory, even reaching Brazil – her second husband, Feridun Erol. Both viewers and critics were delighted with it. She was compared to such celebrities as Gina Lollobrigida, which she did not particularly like.

When she had world fame at her fingertips, she suddenly disappeared from the screens. Only years later did it turn out that she was struggling with a serious illness, which forced her to be hospitalized. This put a shadow on her first marriage with the cameraman, Bogusław Lambach, which she experienced very much. It was only with the director Feridun Erol that she regained her happiness and faith in love. Shortly after the wedding, the couple welcomed a son, Marcin, into the world.

– she said in an interview with Film magazine. Although the industry demanded her, she did not intend to return to the screens. She devoted herself to motherhood, and later to caring for her ailing mother. However, she still performed on the boards of the Powszechny Theater in Łódź, with which she was associated for 64 years, creating many outstanding acting creations.
Eventually, the second marriage of the actress also ended in divorce. Then she decided to remind the viewers about herself, but to no avail, because she could not find herself in the roles that were offered to her. – I was pushed out of the screen by the younger ones. I played a few episodic roles, but none deserves attention – she later said. Barbara Połomska died on July 28, 2021 in Łódź. She was 87 years old.
