The 71-year-old has been working as a professional actor for fifty years. He made his debut in 1973 in the series “Black Clouds”, but his career soared almost ten years later, when Agnieszka Holland and Andrzej Wajda noticed him and offered him roles in such films as “Fever” and “Man of Iron”. He also managed to play in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s “Blind”, but due to censorship, the production appeared in cinemas only six years later.
Bogusław Linda had his “American dream”. Everything was ruined by the Security Service
It was similar with many other titles that were created in those days. In the autobiographical book Bad Boy, in which we find the actor’s conversations with Magda Umer, he revealed that during this period of six years he made thirteen films and none of them were shown in cinemas. “But the whole ‘warszawka’ watched them in the studio on Chełmska at closed shows” – commented Linda.
The most famous macho of Polish cinema also revealed to the artist that in the 1980s foreign artists became interested in him. There was an offer to play in the 1982 film “Sophia’s Choice” alongside Meryl Streep, but he was warned at the outset that the production was to have anti-Polish overtones. Apparently, Andrzej Wajda himself suggested to Linda that he reject the role, which the actor did.
A little later, there was another opportunity to play alongside the legendary actress. Wajda was preparing to work on the film “Love in Germany”, in which Meryl Streep was also to play. Linda was also supposed to star in it, but the Security Service became interested in the production.
It was about a passport, some money, marks, and I didn’t have a penny, neither for my children, nor for anything. (…) And then they say that’s fine – they’ll let me go, they’ll give me a passport and stamps, but if I talk about it. He reported – revealed the actor in ‘Bad Boy’.
Linda has not met Meryl Streep. For a while, however, he became a star of Hungarian cinema
Bogusław Linda did not agree to this arrangement, and Meryl Streep also resigned from taking part in the film when she found out about the problems with the cast. The actor had to accept the loss of a chance to perform in the West, and abroad he could only play in the countries of the Eastern Bloc. “Although I didn’t get a passport to various countries, I was able to go to Hungary,” he admitted.
Agnieszka Holland recommended the actor to a Hungarian director with whom he made the politically powerful film “Człowiek do poruczenia”. In many interviews he mentioned that he played in several films from this country and became one of the main “Hungarian” actors. Linda gained popularity in Poland again only in 1992, when he played in “Dogs” by Władysław Pasikowski. This, in turn, resulted in engaging him in more high-profile roles, thanks to which he gained the name of “youth idol of the 90s”.
