Runaway Bride hydrangea was created by crossing a garden and one of the Asian varieties. It owes its name to the incredible, yet delicate beauty and small flowers, which are initially pale green, and later take on a snow-white color. It was bred by Ushio Sakazaki from Japan, who was reminded of a subtle and dazzling bride in a white wedding dress. It begins to bloom at the end of May and ends only in autumn. She was named Plant of the Year 2018 at the Chelsea Flower Show.

When deciding on a Runaway Bride, you should be aware that, unlike other garden hydrangeas, it is a dwarf variety with a hanging habit, and its shoots form beautiful garlands that rarely exceed 1 meter in length. This means that it is best to cultivate it in a large pot on the balcony or terrace, but it will also work well in flowerbeds. Unlike its “cousin”, when it blooms, flowers appear not only at the ends of the shoots, but along their entire length. How to care for it?

How to care for the runaway bride hydrangea? Bet on regular watering and fertilization

As with the other garden hydrangeas, also Runaway Bride prefers semi-shaded positions and fertile, moist, slightly acidic soil. Requires regularbut not too much watering. It is best to keep the substrate constantly moist. Pay attention to this especially in spring and summer, when it is especially hot. In the case of mild winters, when the temperature stays in the plus, hydrangeas planted in the garden should be well watered. In addition, fertilization should not be omitted, which will provide them with all the necessary nutrients. Do this both before and after flowering. You can use ready-made preparations for acidophilous plants, or make a homemade fertilizer from coffee grounds.
