He was writing a CV when he came up with the idea of creating “Autobiography”. Due to censorship, he had to change the text

“Autobiografia” by Perfect is one of the greatest Polish music hits. Few people know, however, what is the history of its creation. It turns out that the idea for the lyrical layer was born accidentally, and the inspiration for the author was the CV.

Today he is a legend of Polish rock. The band was founded in 1980, although the first attempts to conquer the stages began three years earlier. They have as many as 10 studio albums and many more, and one of the most important is “Autobiografia”, which was promoted by the second album “UNU”. What is the history of its creation?

The first chords were created in the Bar of the Europejski Hotel. The whole composition was created in a few minutes

Although Perfect, like many other groups, suspended their artistic activities during the martial law, music never left its members. It was then that “Autobiography” began to sprout. One day, Zbigniew Holdys went to the Hotel Europejski bar, where he not only looked for inspiration, but also spent his free time. Suddenly, chords came to his mind and he decided to write them down on a paper napkin. After returning home, he decided to check the sound and a moment later he created more lines. This is how the famous composition was created. “First I did the chorus, played it three times at home, and immediately flowed into the verse. No revisions, no nothing, with a break between the verse and the chorus. As if a colleague at the height said: “Here you are, shithead, as a gift” – . Then he passed the melody to Bogdan Olewicz, who at that time was the band’s main lyricist. He approached the creation of the lyrical layer several times, but without major results. Until the day he remembered the need to write a resume.

The inspiration for “Autobiography” was a CV. Everyone knows her today

It was the time when Olewicz was looking for a job. One of the conversations with a certain Polish company ended successfully, because he received an offer, but it was necessary to complete formalities, including delivery of CV. But he had to write them first. When he started writing his biography, he came up with the idea to create the text of the song in the same form. However, he was not convinced that such a convention would appeal to the listeners, but he had nothing to lose and bet everything on one card. This is how a song was created about three friends who grew up in Warsaw’s Muranów district, listened to songs often and dreamed of a career as great as his.

At the next team meeting, he presented the text to the members, but they were not particularly happy, and most of them expressed disappointment. Nevertheless, an attempt was made to make a recording. Initially, the song was to be sung by Zbigniew Holdys, but eventually he was replaced. The idea was for him to perform it as if he were reading a newspaper. The final effect, contrary to earlier fears, turned out to be satisfactory. However, there were several changes in the text, e.g. the line “wind of renewal blew” replaced the words “uncle Józek died”, but due to censorship, the correction was made, because it was a reference to Joseph Stalin. It should be noted that “Autobiography” did not immediately become a success, as it took a year from its premiere to its success. He owes the name of the hit and the anthem of the 80s to Piotr Kaczkowski, who decided to help the musicians in promotion by playing the song on Radio Three. Just a few hours later, she was already on the 16th place on the charts.
