What is a housing book? She used to play an important role

In the times of the People’s Republic of Poland, the housing book was a really important document. It was used to save money. The amount of collected funds was recorded in it and confirmed by a number of stamps and signatures of officials. The collected money was to be used by the owners of the book for the subsequent purchase of real estate. The most popular document of this type was issued by PKO Bank Polski. It was distinguished by the characteristic green color of the pages and the maroon cover. Unfortunately, hyperinflation has had a huge impact on the value of saved assets. However, this does not mean that today these documents are worth nothing. On the contrary.

Thanks to a series of changes in regulations, housing books have regained their value. What’s more, they can still be monetized. In addition, the holders of the document are also entitled to a guarantee bonus. The amount of the supplement is calculated on the basis of the price per square meter in residential construction. The index to be used to calculate this rate is provided quarterly by the Central Revenue Office.

How to cash in the warranty booklet? It all depends on the date of creation of the document

Over the years, the rules governing the use of housing booklets have undergone major changes. Despite this, we can cash the funds collected on them to this day. What’s more, in many cases we are entitled to a guarantee bonus. However, before we pay out, several conditions must be met. The date of creation of the document plays a major role. The guarantee bonus applies only to booklets created before October 24, 1990. People who have this type of certificate from later years will receive only the initial contribution and the accumulated interest. In order to receive the bonus, you must first register the passbook with the bank and then comply with the withdrawal deadline set there.

What can we use the funds collected on the housing booklet for? As the name suggests, the expenses must be related to the acquisition or renovation of real estate. The amount received from the cashing of the document can be used for:

  • buying an apartment,
  • house construction,
  • own contribution for a mortgage loan,
  • repayment of a cooperative loan,
  • contribution to the repair fund,
  • property renovation,
  • participation in the Social Housing Association.
