Your phone is eavesdropping on you. Do one thing and you’ll sleep soundly

A friend came over to you. You drink coffee, you talk. You tell her that you need to buy a new dryer because the old one is starting to break down. You’re changing the subject. Then you look at your phone and on the first page you come across offers for dryers. You know it? Is your phone listening to you?

Kind of yes. However, this does not mean that someone sits in a cubicle in a large office building with headphones on and writes down what we talk about there. The phone uses algorithms to detect keywords that are pronounced “in its presence”. On this basis, it conducts an analysis and presents us with offers from various stores or websites tailored to our needs. It makes us feel under surveillance. Sometimes we are not even aware that we have said something out loud, and advertisements literally bombard us from every side. In such situations, these types of advertisements make an even worse impression and make us feel afraid.

My phone is listening to me!

It turns out that we can restore our sense of security in a very simple way. Just go into your phone’s settings. The system cannot download data if it does not receive permission. And the permissions can be found in the settings.

Hop in settings

If your phone runs on Android, just go to the settings and scroll down to the “Privacy protection” option. At this point, we are looking for permission to access the microphone and uncheck all applications that we would like to remove this access from. You should also look at those apps that can only use the microphone when the app is turned on. Some of them run in the background even when they are theoretically not open. We can also set which programs can run in the background according to our preferences. If you are iPhone users, in the settings we are also looking for the “Privacy and protection” tab. Here we find the options to access the microphone and uncheck all applications that have it.

Now your phone won’t pick up data through the microphone. So you can discuss your needs and shopping plans without worry, keeping it nearby. However, it is worth looking at other privacy settings as well, because it is not only the microphone that is used to collect your data.
