Ivan Dimitrov, while on vacation in Italy, carved his and his girlfriend’s names on the walls of the Colosseum. The caption read: Ivan+ Hayley 23. The video of the vandalism quickly went viral, and Italian authorities did not remain passive. Dimitrov expressed remorse for his actions and faces severe punishment, including the possibility of five years in prison. The case became famous when a recording appeared on one of the social networks showing a man who tried to carve the names – his and his girlfriend’s – on the historic wall of the Colosseum. Video titled “A*****e tourist carves name in Colosseum in Rome” became an Internet hit, reaching over 300,000 views. Many Internet users were outraged by this shameful act and emphasized that such thoughtlessness cannot go unpunished.

The Colosseum is one of the most valuable pearls of Roman architecture. The history of this building goes back almost 2000 years. Therefore, any action aimed at destroying this historical structure is not only senseless, but also unacceptable.

The Carabinieri, or Italian police, quickly tracked down Ivan Dimitrov and his girlfriend in Bulgaria, where the tourist was from. During the conversation with the man, he expressedsincere regretsfor his alleged actions. Ivan claimed thate didn’t realize it was a monument. Now he was worried about the consequences of a possible trial and the possible punishment. His irresponsible act can result in a fine of up to 15,000 euros or up to five years in prison.

Italy’s Minister of Culture expressed public opposition to this outrageous act of vandalism

Italy’s Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, publicly expressed his opposition to this heinous act of vandalism. He called him offensive to everyone in the worldwho appreciate the value of monuments and history.

It is something terrible, unworthy and proof of the lack of civilized manners that a tourist mutilates one of the most famous places in the world, the heritage of history, which is the Colosseum.

He added that he was grateful to the Carabinieri for quickly identifying the perpetrator of this absurd act and hoped that justice would be fully served. Minister Sangiuliano stressed that those who cause damage in such places must face the appropriate consequences for their actions.
