Due to its cultural, historical, traditional and social value, source of employment for about 2,000 families, Guayaquil has been celebrating Guayabera Day for a year now.

The commemoration came about after a resolution of the city’s cantonal council, which was in ordinary session the day before last year July 21 as the official date to celebrate this particular item of clothing.

“With the aim of highlighting the traditional garment adopted by the porteƱos, which identifies them traditionally and culturally, and which is imbued with the identity of Guayaquil, which is considered a representative symbol of the city,” the city council emphasized at the time during the June 1, 2022 session.

The guayabera, a typical piece of clothing that changes in design and color

Two classic garments among the guayacos are the protagonists of Father’s Day. The guayabera, the cotona and partying dads never go out of style! Pictured: Anthony Suarez wears a white cotton for this Sunday.

Therefore, 2023 will be the second year that relevant tributes will be held for this clothing, the use of which dates back almost a century in the city of Buenos Aires. For its comfort, it is a precious shirt in the Guayaca sphere, as it is made of both cotton and linen, making it a fresh and versatile piece of clothing for our climate.

Despite the long use of this garment in Latin American countries, especially the Caribbean, some historical sources still cannot trace its true origin. According to Juan Carlos Orellana, manager of Orellana guayaberas, in an earlier report to this newspaper, the garment as we GuayaquileƱos know it came from Cuba in the 19th century.
