Elżbieta Zającówna did not dream of acting at all – she wanted to connect her professional future with sport. Unfortunately, this became impossible when she was diagnosed with von Willebrand disease. It is a congenital disease resulting from genetic disorders. It manifests e.g. frequent or prolonged nose bleeds, bruising easily, sometimes with lumps, bleeding after taking medicines such as ibuprofen or aspirin, and in women, long and heavy menstrual bleeding. It does not always involve hospital treatment, but in some patients it requires it.
It was then that she bet on the theater, and the film soon came to her attention. – When I got seriously ill, I understood what is most important in life. My approach to the profession has changed. I told myself that I would not die on stage – she said in one of the interviews.
Elżbieta Zającówna made her debut just before the outbreak of martial law. “
I was very lucky”
In 1981 she graduated from PWST in Kraków. – I’ve been very lucky in my professional life. I’ve never been one of those people who are desperately looking for a job, because when I finished working on one film, I was immediately offered another role. I made my debut just before the outbreak of martial law. Colleagues who entered professional life a few years later had a much harder time. After graduating in Krakow, I worked for a long time at the Syrena Theater for 4 years, and for the next 12 at the Rampa Theater – in an interview with Onet in 2012. – By some miracle, I found true artists, enthusiasts, with whom work was fascinating, and from whom you could learn a lot. Let me mention Janusz Józefowicz, Andrzej Strzelecki or Wojciech Kępczyński. I have really fond memories of that time,” she added. Later, it was also shown in Warsaw’s Komedie. And in the 90s she was one of the brightest stars on television.
And it’s not just about the series “Mothers, Wives and Lovers” directed by Juliusz Machulski and Ryszard Zatorski, in which she played Hanka, a shot optimist. She traveled around Poland and often appeared in extremely popular programs with feast music recorded for television. With the orchestra of Zbigniew Górny, apart from her, they performed on stage, among others. Zbigniew Wodecki, Majka Jeżowska, Jacek Wójcicki and Beata Rybotycka. However, when in 1991 she and her husband Krzysztof Jaroszyński welcomed a daughter into the world, she decided to combine caring for the child with a career despite many activities. – When Gabrysia was born, I transferred all my strength and emotions to her. For five days a week, I only took care of her, and on weekends I went with stage performances – she recalls. Today, the daughter is an adult, and Zającówna has had a production company for years. She is also charitable – she is the vice-president of the Polsat Foundation.
Return after years with Piotr Machalica at his side
At the beginning of the 21st century, Zającówna played in the telenovela “Dreams to come true”, she was also the host of the programs “Family secrets” and “The funniest animals in the world”. After the role of Anna in the series “On the cat’s paw” in 2008, she disappeared from film and television for a long time. Only in 2020 did she play in the romantic comedy “Happiness goes in pairs”. She met on the set with Piotr Machalica, with whom she had worked before and who had similar professional experiences. The actor said:
The last big movie I made was about 20 years ago. That’s why these few days on the set of this comedy are something fantastic for me. I would like to add that I had a scene to play that was quite difficult for my age, because it was a love scene. I hope I made it.
Elżbieta Zającówna, in turn, said: I am glad that I had the pleasure of meeting Piotr Machalica on the set once again. Once we had played a married couple in some TV theater, but we couldn’t remember which one. Then we played the role of a young couple in love, now – the parents.

Unfortunately, Machalica did not live to see the premiere of the production, which took place only two years later due to the pandemic. The actor died in December 2020.
