Padre Pio was born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy. As a child, he experienced apparitions. It is not surprising that as a teenager he joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. In the first years of his ministry, stigmata appeared on his body. There is a theory that they were supposed to correspond to the five wounds that were inflicted on Jesus during the crucifixion.
