Cinema owners are afraid to show it. The distributor complains about censorship, and the leading French media, including “Le Figaro”, the weeklies “Le Point” and the famous “Le Monde”, write about it. It seems that the high-profile document caused a real media storm in France.
The famous Polish documentary caused a storm in France
“Polanski, Horowitz. Hometown” is a Polish documentary film directed by Mateusz Kudła and Anna Kokoszka-Romer. The work depicts a journey to the hometown of Krakow by director Roman Polañski and his friend, photographer Ryszard Horowitz. The artists meet each other after several decades, wandering around the city in the footsteps of their wartime experiences. They both met in the Krakow ghetto – but they managed to survive the Holocaust.
Polanski was hidden by a poor Polish family in a house in the village of Wysoka. Horowitz, on the other hand, survived thanks to a German manufacturer. Although the premiere of the Polish documentary on the Seine took place on July 5, not all French viewers had the opportunity to watch it. – The film’s distributor, ARP (the same one that introduced another Polish title to France a few months earlier – Jerzy Skolimowski’s “IO” nominated for an Oscar) complains about censorship – Filmweb.
Polish documentary fell victim to the culture of exclusion?
– Cinema owners don’t even want to see it. They say it’s better not to include it in the repertoire. It seems that this is a return to the times of McCarthyism and witch hunts – says Michèle Halberstadt, director of the Industrial Development Agency quoted by Filmweb. As he says himself, polish documentary fell victim to “cancel culture”. Its essence is to exclude from the public space all activities, ideas or people who do not adhere to political correctness.
“The most hypocritical distributors question the quality of the film”
Cinema owners who refused to show the film explain that “the documentary is not that popular at all.” The problem is that the audience says otherwise. The Polish work receives positive reviews from the most famous critics, it has already won three audience awards at film festivals. – Return to Krakow, directed by Polish filmmakers, is a touching documentary, composed of words, laughter and silence, where intelligence, humor and modesty compete. Lying distributors question the quality of the film, the most honest admit that they are afraid of social protests – French journalist Sandrine Treiner in “LeJournal”.
