Cillian Murphy on playing Oppenheimer: At one point I just stopped eating

“Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig and “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan will compete for the title of this year’s holiday film. In the latter, the title role was played by Cillian Murphy, who revealed in a recent interview that at some point he lost himself in preparation for this role. “I was running with some strange energy,” said the “Peaky Blinders” star.

On Friday, July 21, two great productions will start playing on the screens of Polish cinemas. One of them is “Oppenheimer”, which will tell the story of the American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the creation of the atomic bomb.

The man was the director of the “Manhattan” nuclear weapons program during World War II. In addition, he studied black holes and cosmic rays. He devoted the rest of his life after developing the atomic bomb to activities aimed at limiting the proliferation of nuclear weapons. He had a turbulent period in his career when he was suspected by the American government of espionage, and only President Kennedy made him politically rehabilitated. Oppenheimer is today recognized as one of the symbols of pacifism and opposition to nuclear proliferation.

Cillian Murphy will never play a smoker again!

Christopher Nolan (“Interstellar”, “Dunkirk”) is responsible for creating the film about this extraordinary scientist, and the script was created based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “Oppenheimer: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Father of the Atomic Bomb” by Kai Bird, Martin J. Sherwin.

The title character was played by Cillian Murphy, who owes the greatest recognition to his role in the British series “Peaky Blinders”. In an interview with The Guardian, he shared information about the preparations for this extraordinary role. He revealed that he used a very restrictive diet to resemble his hero. It turned out that the effects could be deplorable: “I was competing with myself to see how little I could eat to survive. It wasn’t healthy. I don’t recommend it to anyone” – he admitted.

When asked about the details of the menu and the specific number of kilograms lost, he replied that he did not want to talk about it. “I don’t want headlines like ‘Cillian lost so much weight for the role’ in the context of the film,” explained the three-time Irish Film & Television Award winner. However, he decided to reveal that at some point he lost control of himself:

I was running with some strange energy. At one point, I just stopped eating. But that’s good, because this guy was like that – he didn’t worry about food or other such mundane things. He only smoked a pipe and cigarettes in turns. I’ve smoked a lot of fake cigarettes. I have decided that my next character cannot be a smoker. Even herbal cigarettes now carry health warnings. It’s just not healthy.

In addition, Cillian Murphy stated that the end result of the film is stunning. “I don’t like to watch myself, but this film is a unique work. It’s very provocative. Sometimes it’s like a biopic, sometimes it’s a thriller, sometimes it’s a horror movie. It will knock people out,” the star assured.

“Oppenheimer” will appear in cinemas on July 21, and all moviegoers must prepare for a long screening. The film lasts three hours, and according to the director, the picture has a chance to revolutionize cinema due to several technical surprises. In addition to Murphy, the film also stars Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman and Josh Hartnett.
