“Mom doesn’t want to go to a nursing home and I can’t imagine it any other way”

– I love my mother, but neither I nor my sister can imagine devoting our lives to taking care of her every day. In my opinion, this is the best solution, but my mother doesn’t even want to hear about it, and as soon as I mention it, a fight starts, MaƂgorzata writes in a letter sent to our editorial office.

I am aware that the subject of parental care is very controversial in our country. Many people think that it is the “duty” of children. However, I completely disagree with this. I love my mother, but neither I nor my sister can imagine devoting our lives to taking care of her every day. In my opinion, a nursing home is the best solution, but my mother doesn’t even want to hear about it, and whenever I mention it, a fight starts.

I have never hidden my views on this subject and on every possible occasion I openly said that when an elderly person is no longer able to function alone in their home, the best option, both for that person and their family, is simply good nursing home. To these words, my mother always replied that she did not give birth to children so that she would have to stay in a nursing home in her old age. For years, my sister and I just let it pass our ears, but now we are more and more afraid of what it will be like when the moment comes to make this decision.

Mom is 80 years old, so far she is still quite fit, so she lives alone in her apartment. Once a week a lady comes to her house to help clean up and do major shopping. Me and my older sister also visit her regularly. However, with each passing year, my mother is getting weaker and weaker, forgetting, not to mention the fact that she is forced to spend most of her time alone. Eventually, there will come a time when she will need constant help. She doesn’t want to go to a nursing home, and I can’t imagine it any other way. I don’t know what to do, but I just won’t change my mind.

Margaret.
