Part Two” is scheduled for a world premiere on November 1, 2023. Fans therefore had to wait two years to see the continuation of the screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s famous novel. As in the case of the first part, “Dune” is again one of the most anticipated films of the year and there are many signs that it may become a movie with a large viewership.
How long will Dune: Part Two last?
Portado reports that at the current stage of development on the film, which is due to be released in theaters in late autumn, the new “Dune” will run three hours and 15 minutes. This is 40 more than the previous part (that one lasted exactly 156 minutes). But this does not necessarily have to be a big inconvenience and a test of endurance for viewers.
Let’s not forget that the Oscar-winning “Schindler’s List” lasts the same, the cult “Titanic” is barely a minute shorter, and the latest hit by James Cameron, “Avatar: Essence of Water” was a game lasting three hours and 10 minutes. American film critic Roger Ebert once said, “No good movie is too long, and no bad movie is too short.” Of course, a lot can still change in the assembly before the premiere and it turns out that the producer decided to shorten the screening a bit.
Let’s add that there were also longer films in Hollywood. “Once Upon a Time in America” from 1984 lasted 229 minutes, and “Generals” from 2003 was released to cinemas in a version lasting 219 minutes, although the director’s cut is already 280 minutes. The war drama “Gettysburg” (1993) lasts a solid four hours and 31 minutes. “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” from 2021 is four hours and two minutes of fun, while the screening of “Hamlet” from 1996, starring Kenneth Branagh, Kate Winslet and Billy Crystal, lasts a trifle 238 minutes. Let’s not forget that the legendary “Gone with the Wind” from 1939 required viewers to spend three hours and 44 minutes in cinema seats, while watching “Cleopatra” from 1963, lovers of Elizabeth Taylor could enjoy the filmmaker’s momentum for three hours and 53 minutes.
What will happen in the second part of “Dune”?
The plot of the second part of the film is to start right after the finale of the previous part. As we remember, at this stage Paul Atreides managed to win the duel with Jamis and be accepted with his mother into the Fremen tribe. In the final scenes of the film, we see them embarking on a journey into the desert together. From the trailers of the new production, it can be concluded that not much time has passed.
“Prince Paul Atreides adopts the moniker of Muad’Dib and begins a spiritual and physical journey to become the prophesied liberator of the people of Dune,” the Polish distributor of the film succinctly announces. In addition, there is no doubt that he will begin to implement a plan to avenge the death of his murdered father. Director Denis Villeneuve wrote the screenplay, based on the novel by Frank Herbert, with Jon Spaihts.
Paul Atreides will reprise her role as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson will reprise her role as Lady Jessica, and Javier Bardem will reprise her role as Stiglar. In addition, there will be Josh Brolin, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Stellan Skarsgård and Dave Butista. Joining the cast are Christopher Walken (Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV), Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan Corrino), Golden Globe winner for playing Elvis Presley Austin Butler (his character is Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, so he’ll be the BAD one. Viewers of the David Lynch film may remember that the role had previously been played by Sting) and Léa Seydoux (Lady Margot Fenring).
The first part of “Dune” was not only enthusiastically received by critics and viewers. The film received 10 Oscar nominations, of which it won six statuettes: for the best soundtrack, for sound, editing, cinematography, production design and special effects.
