Many know his face, not his name. He played his first leading role in a film at the age of 79

Contrary to his parents’ expectations, W³odzimierz Boruñski did not become a lawyer. He chose acting, but the profession was not kind to him. Although for years he worked alongside outstanding filmmakers, he waited 79 years for the main role in the film.

“His face must be associated by everyone who has watched the cult series of the 1970s at least once in their lives,” wrote Sebastian Chosiński from the esensja.pl website. Włodzimierz Boruński was born in Łódź, and his relationship with Julian Tuwim could not but influence his passions. Although he started studying law, he quickly realized that it was the artistic world that interested him the most.

Włodzimierz Boruński was supposed to be a lawyer, but he chose acting. He had reason to be sorry

He wrote many collections of poetry, worked in theaters and cabarets. He wrote sketches, monologues, songs, directed. In 1945, he founded the theater company “Siódme heaven”, and until 1947 he edited the magazine “On the Guard”. Although he worked hard to prove to his parents that abandoning his career as a lawyer was a good idea, lead roles eluded him. Because of its distinctive beauty.

“My Jewish fizis did not please the owners of the capital’s theaters and cabarets. They already had their Jews and did not need a new one that looked like … a caricature of a Jew” – the actor’s portal Viva. Boruński finally wrote off his acting career and focused on other activities. Then he got an offer to play in “All Souls’ Day” from Tadeusz Konwicki. He was 55 at the time.

The role of Goldapfel in Konwicki and Chmielewski’s film marked the beginning of his screen career. Although he was still engaged mainly in episodic roles, he had the opportunity to work with the most outstanding artists of those years. He played in “The Promised Land” by Wajda, “Czterdziestolatek” by Jerzy Gruza, and “Staff” by Krzysztof Kieślowski.

“Wasn’t my acting just a pipe dream?”

His biggest dream of a leading role in a movie came true in 1985. At the age of 79, Włodzimierz Boruński played the main role in Janusz Majewski’s Mrzonka. “It’s like my re-debut, and at the same time the moment when a wave of reflection came. About what was before, about life and work. Was my acting by chance not one big dream” – Viva quotes an interview with “Kobieta i Życie” magazine .

The film about an ailing Jew who recalls the old world and prays for a gentle death turned out to be not only Boruński’s professional fulfillment, but also his farewell. Mr. B. is the last role he played. The actor died on April 10, 1988 in Warsaw.
