Maciej Maciejewski was a legend of Polish cinema and theatre. He created many excellent roles with which he was permanently remembered by viewers, but he also went down in history as the longest-lived Polish actor. What was his career path?

was born on October 1, 1914 in Augustów. He gained his first stage experience as a student at the Warsaw Opera Studio, and made his debut at the age of 24 in Stanisław Moniuszko’s Halka. Later he left for Grodno, where he joined the Puppet and Actor Theatre.

In 1946, Maciejewski graduated from the Iwo Galla acting studio in Kraków, where he trained his acting skills. A year later, he took the extramural exam, obtaining a degree. In the meantime, he already performed in the Rhapsodic Theater and Groteska. Throughout his career, he was also associated with many other institutions, including the Wybrzeże Theater in Gdynia or the Dramatic Theater in Łódź. However, he performed the longest on the stage of the Polish Theater in Warsaw, creating nearly 100 excellent acting creations.

Maciejewski’s first screen role was an episode in the film Młodości Chopina, directed by . He was 37 at the time. Later, he appeared in many productions with the most eminent Polish directors, including at Jerzy Kawalerowicz, Jan Batory, Bohdan Poręba and Janusz Majewski. However, the role of a lieutenant in “Kananale” brought him the greatest popularity and critical acclaim. He regularly appeared in performances, as he created over 40 creations. For over half a century he was also associated with the Polish Radio Theatre.

The television audience could associate Maciejewski with many roles in popular series. He made guest appearances in in “The Doll”, “Hot Life” or “Adam and Eve”. The last time he appeared on the small screen was in 2002 in “Life itself”. It was then that he decided to retire, having parted ways with the theater a few years earlier. On May 17, 2018, the media was informed about the death of Maciej Maciejewski. The artist died at the age of 103, which made him the longest-living actor in the history of Polish cinematography. He was buried at Warsaw’s Powązki Military Cemetery.
