Despite the constantly growing awareness of the society, it happens that rape victims still encounter misunderstanding. An 18-year-old American, Marie, found out about it.
The dramatic story of a teenage girl became a Netflix hit. This is a series based on true events
The heroine of the series “Unbelievable” is a young woman, Marie (played by Kaitlyn Dever), who shows up at the police station to report a crime. Clearly devastated, she confesses with tears in her eyes that she was raped a few hours earlier, and the circumstances of the event are terrifying. The attacker broke into her apartment and then tied her up, also covering her eyes. He had a balaclava on his face, so he can’t recognize him. Her nightmare lasted for several hours. Finally, the perpetrator took a picture of her and simply left.
Hours of interrogations begin immediately, during which the heroine has to return to the events of the previous night over and over again. Investigators show no empathy, do not even seem to believe her and constantly undermine her words. In the end, it is suggested that she invented everything to get attention. Marie succumbs to manipulation and withdraws from the charges, and the consequences appear almost immediately. An 18-year-old girl is accused of making false statements, but that’s just the beginning of another nightmare. She appears on the covers of newspapers as a fraud, she loses her job, friends stop talking to her, and there is no support from her family. Lost in despair and loneliness, she wants to take her own life. The case takes on a new dimension when two years later, living in over 2,000 km further on, a woman falls victim to a similar attack. Investigators Karen Duvall (Merritt Wever) and Grace Rasmussen (Toni Collette) quickly begin to connect the dots and conclude that Marie wasn’t lying at all.
It really happened. The 18-year-old was one of the many victims of a serial criminal
debuted on Netflix in September 2019 and became an instant hit. In the following months, it did not disappear from the most important rankings of the platform, enjoying unflagging popularity and interest among viewers. The 8-episode series shows the fate of 18-year-old Marie. The story of the teenager freezes the blood in the veins and it’s hard to believe that all this, and the girl was the only one of many victims.
In the years 2008-2011 in the states of Washington and Colorado, a similar tragedy befell dozens of women. Each of the cases, and there were many, looked very similar. It is true that the victims were of different ages (the youngest was a few years old, and the oldest a pensioner), had different skin colors, origins or special features, but the circumstances remained the same. The young woman’s dramatic experiences and outrageous police conduct were described by journalists Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong in their Pulitzer Prize-winning article, “The Unbelievable Rape Story,” published on ProPublica seven years after the crime. It was this text that inspired the creators of Netflix when creating the script for “Unbelievable”.
