“Polish dubbing has lost a wonderful man” – representatives of the Disney Comics Center wrote after the death of actress and dubbing director Miriam Aleksandrowicz. The artist worked almost all her life. Several decades in the profession resulted in unforgettable roles such as Dyzio from “Duck Tales” or Muriel from the series “Chojrak – the Cowardly Dog”.

For years, the actress was called the “mother of dubbing”, her mother awakened her passion for performing in front of the microphone and playing with her voice. Zofia Dybowska-Aleksandrowicz was also a well-known dubbing director, from an early age she engaged Miriam, who played children’s characters. Zofia declared then that working with her own child was much easier for her.
Unfortunately, the close relationship between mother and daughter was interrupted by a family drama. Miriam Aleksandrowicz’s mother and grandmother were brutally murdered in an apartment in Warsaw’s Old Town. Zofia was found with 24 blows to the heart, Maria – Miriam’s grandmother – had her throat cut. This year marks the 34th anniversary of the shocking crime.
“The series of murders began on April 9, 1989. From that moment on, elderly, lonely people could not feel safe and could become a potential victim of the perpetrators” – an operational officer of the Warsaw Police Headquarters in an interview with Polsat News. The murders took place in the Old Town, each of the victims was wealthy, and the procedure was carefully planned. Before their death, the perpetrators abused the victims, but none of the cases have been clarified to this day.

Criminals broke into the apartment of Zofia Dybowska-Aleksandrowicz late at night on September 8, 1989. They most likely entered through an open window, thanks to the scaffolding left outside after renovation works in the Old Town. In the morning, neighbors knocked on the door of the actress to bring fresh newspapers to the women, as usual. When no one responded, they entered the open room.
“I heard my father’s voice on the phone that I should immediately return to Warsaw because my mother and grandmother are dead. Grandma had her throat cut and my mother was stabbed 24 times in the heart area,” Miriam Aleksandrowicz told the “Intervention” program.
To commit such a well-thought-out crime, the murderers had to know the tenants’ daily schedule well. Although there are many traces and fingerprints left in the apartment, to this day no one has been able to apprehend the perpetrators and explain their motives. Moreover, nothing of value was missing from the house. “There were fingerprints all over the house. There were some cigarette butts in the ashtray. My mother smoked but she didn’t wear makeup, and one of the butts had lipstick marks on,” Miriam reported.
The only thing missing from Maria and Zofia’s house were documents describing the case of Leopold Okulickei. How the Onet portal, the last Home Army leader was captured and transported to Moscow, where he died of a heart attack and was cremated – was this the real cause of the man’s death? Due to the method of burial, this could not be verified. The papers handed over to Zofia Dybowska-Aleksandrowicz also included information on works of art plundered by the Germans during World War II.
There were six similar murders in Warsaw’s Old Town at that time. “Most of the victims are people aged 75 to 83. In their apartments, the perpetrators found jewelry and valuable items” – says Marcin Szyndler from the Warsaw Police Headquarters in an interview with Polsat.
“My whole life has been bothering me that if it were the other way around, if I died, my mother would dig until she found them,” the actress confessed in the episode of “Interventions” dedicated to the case. Although Miriam Aleksandrowicz could not get rid of the remorse that she was not at the crime scene for many years, the actress did not completely cut herself off from the traumatic past. She lived in a place where her loved ones were brutally murdered.
