On Saturday, June 24, Rod Stewart played the opening concert of his first tour in 13 years at the Home Park stadium in the British city of Plymouth. Everything was going perfectly well until 10.30 pm – then the lights suddenly went out and the artist furiously left the stage. He only managed to tell the fans gathered at his performance that he would no longer sing the iconic song “Sailing”, because the mayor of Plymouth ordered them to stop the event.

“Sailing” is a song that is significant because it is dedicated to brave sailors from the British army, and Plymouth itself has long traditions related to the sea. Rod Stewart was about to perform this significant piece when someone called him from the side of the stage. The singer repeated to the fans that he had to stop immediately because there was an hour of curfew and then darkness fell. The case is puzzling because Home Park has a special license that allows you to play until 23.

Things got so bad that the city council issued a separate statement saying the mayor wasn’t even at the concert, and he certainly didn’t order the party to end – especially since he’s a retired sailor himself and the lyrics to “Sailing” were carved on his tombstone father. The official also gave an interview to “Plymouth Live”:
My phones are ringing, hundreds of people are angry. Someone even called me names in my local shop. (…) I am terrified that I was involved in this.
